Cris Cyborg: No regrets about UFC departure, not ruling out Amanda Nunes rematch

At the conclusion of her UFC tenure, Cris Cyborg doesn’t have any regrets.

The former UFC featherweight champion, who had concluded her contract with the company but was in a period of exclusive negotiation, was released from the that commitment by the UFC in early August, after a rift with president Dana White. The two verbally sparred in the weeks leading up to the final bout of her contract at UFC 240. Following Cyborg’s victory over Felicia Spencer, tensions seemed to rise even further, when Cyborg (21-2) confronted White backstage after the win.

In a video posted on her official YouTube channel on Thursday, Cyborg spoke with Globo Esporte about her departure. The 34-year-old, who has held titles in the UFC, Strikeforce, and Invicta, was unrepentant and said she felt she made the correct decisions along her bumpy exit.

“I am happy,” Cyborg said. “Everything I did was always feeling my heart. I don’t regret anything I have done.”

“I believe the guarantee of the future is what you do in the present, everyday. And my actions were always to do good things,” Cyborg continued. “So I know if I do good things, I’ll have good things back. I don’t worry about that.”

Cyborg drew comparisons between her UFC departure and other times she left promotions over the years. In a potential freudian slip, Cyborg even listed a promotion she hasn’t fought for – “yet.”

“I passed by many cycles,” Cyborg said. “Many projects. In a cycle there is always a beginning, middle, and an end. Like Invicta had an end. Bellator… No, no Bellator yet. The UFC had a beginning, middle, end. Strikeforce. I am starting a new cycle. I am happy, anxious, looking forward to start.”

As Cyborg reflected on her tenure with the UFC, she expressed how proud she was of her accomplishments there. One fight which never happened was a rematch with UFC women’s double champion Amanda Nunes.

Cyborg’s lone UFC loss came at the hands of Nunes, who won via knockout in 53 seconds at UFC 232. While they’re no longer fighting for the same promotion, Cyborg isn’t ruling out the possibility the fight ends up happening down the line.

“Amanda is the champion, there is a division,” Cyborg said. “Every moment of my life, I start a project. And the UFC project was to have my division. I put an effort to get down to the division. I made it and there is a division now.”

“Who knows? Maybe if we meet in another place. For sure I want the rematch. It’s a cool fight. But if it doesn’t happen now, I believe in God’s time. Amanda knows it’s not for her.”

A major point of contingency during her fallout with the UFC was White’s denial Cyborg wanted a rematch with Nunes. When she thinks about the fight, Cyborg said she believes White is kicking himself.

“When Dana White realizes he’s not having Amanda Nunes vs. Cris Cyborg, he’ll feel a little loser because he is a promoter,” Cyborg said. “And what does a promoter want? To promote the best fights. But then something personal happened and with that come the mistakes.”

As for her future, Cyborg stated she believes she will be signing a new contract in less than 30 days. She did not name which promotion she will be signing to, though she did rule out any possibility of going back to the UFC.

“I’ll be online to tell everybody about my new place,” Cyborg said. “.. It’s a secret. Almost there. Almost there.”
