Bellator 226’s main card got off to an interesting start with a featherweight upset.
It looked like striking phenom Gaston Bolanos was setting up another highlight-reel knockout against underdog Daniel Carey. But a brief lapse cost him the fight – and his consciousness.
Carey (7-3 MMA, 3-2 BMMA) slapped on a guillotine late in the fight’s opening frame, jumped guard and shot his corner a smile. At first, it looked like Bolanos (5-2 MMA, 5-2 BMMA) might survive the arm-in attempt. But when Bolanos stopped moving, Carey casually informed referee Mike Beltran that his opponent was out, and quick intervention confirmed that fact.
Carey, cornered by UFC and PFL vet Brian Foster, used his mic time post-fight to ham it up.
“Chael Sonnen, come get these hands!” he said with a smile.
The retired middleweight and light heavyweight star and Bellator commentator might pass on that offer. But with such an impressive performance, he no doubt got some attention.
