Dual UFC champ Henry Cejudo adds Jose Aldo to hit list, teases next fight announcement

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo is still several months out from being ready to train, but he says the the announcement of his next opponent is imminent.

Cejudo (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC), the current UFC bantamweight and flyweight champion, had shoulder surgery not long after his title win over Marlon Moraes at UFC 238 in June. He’s been rehabbing at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas and, while happy with his progress, said he’s still got more work to do

“I’m healing pretty quickly, but I’m still not 100 percent,” Cejudo told MMA Junkie on Friday. “It’s going to be maybe another three-to-four-month process before I can eventually start training again, but I’m making huge improvements. It’s just a matter of time before my shoulder wanted to give out. It finally gave out, and I’m going to have a new shoulder pretty much. I have a screw in my bone pretty much. It happened in the first round against Marlon, which is why I threw nothing but right hands. The will to win. I’m just excited to see what the future holds for me.”

Cejudo’s future apparently will be revealed sooner than later. “Triple C” said a fight announcement is coming during Saturday’s UFC 241 broadcast, where he will serve as an ESPN analyst for the event.

UFC president Dana White previously had stated that he liked the idea of Cejudo dropping back to 125 pounds for a rematch with Joseph Benavidez (2-5 MMA, 15-3 UFC), who handed the Olympic gold medalist his most recent loss in a split decision in December 2016.

That matchup doesn’t appear to get Cejudo’s juices flowing, though. His preference appears to be between a pair of former UFC champs in Frankie Edgar (23-7-1 MMA, 17-7-1 UFC) and Jose Aldo (28-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC), who have both recently stated their intention to compete in the bantamweight division.

“Dana White can say what he wants, but at the end of the day I own two weight divisions,” Cejudo said. “I own the 125-pound, I am the kingpin at the flyweight division and bantamweight division, and there’s a lot of big names. It ain’t just Joseph Benavidez. You think I want to cut another 25 pounds? We just heard Frankie Edgar is making the way down. If you guys didn’t see the message I had, you can go and look at it. Go on my Twitter because I mean business.

“The other one is – Jose Aldo said it today. He called me out. He’s coming down to 135 pounds. There’s a lot of great excitement in the bantamweight division and the announcement will be made tomorrow night on ESPN.”

Although his next booking is apparently close to being revealed, Cejudo said it won’t be happening until 2020.

“It’s going to take place next year because I’m a professional. I take my time because I want to make sure I’m ready to come back because everybody is after me. When you’re a champion, especially when you have two belts, you don’t just have one division after you. You have two. I have options.”

And about him calling out women’s UFC champ Valentina Shevchenko (18-3 MMA, 7-2 UFC)? He’s ready to make that happen whenever he can.

“I’m still after that intergender world title. What’s up, Valentina? I hope you’re watching,” Cejudo said. “I just cannot stop thinking about you. I want your belt. I want you gold. If (calling out Shevchenko) rubs (anyone) the wrong way, you can bend the knee, too. Because I’m a gold digger, and I want all the gold in the world.”
