Enrique Barzola wants alternate role for Bellator’s bantamweight grand prix

Enrique Barzola wants in Bellator’s bantamweight grand prix.

The Season 2 winner of “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” plans to stay in form following his successful Bellator debut in January in Phoenix in case the promotion comes calling for a replacement in the upcoming tournament.

Barzola (17–5–2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA), who defeated Darrion Caldwell by third-round TKO, hopes the promotion will consider him as an alternate. He thinks he’s in his prime and is ready to hang with the best in Bellator.

“I want to be in the tournament – that would be a big step,” Barzola told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “I’m 32 years old. I feel I’m at my best right now. I feel strong. I feel like a new fighter – both physically and mentally. And I always train hard.

“So if they give me the opportunity, of course I want to be in the tournament, 100 percent. I don’t want to lose focus on my weight, on my vision. And if they don’t give me the opportunity, that’s no problem. I’ll fight whoever outside of the tournament and keep my eye on the title for the future, maybe at the end of the year or early next. Whenever, I’ll be ready.”

Brazola already is focusing on his health and staying in shape following his successful Bellator debut. The American Kickboxing Academy product hasn’t gotten an official word from Bellator to serve as a backup for the grand prix, but he’s already doing everything on his end in case the opportunity comes knocking.

“I’m going to be ready for April, which is when the tournament is supposed to happen,” Barzola said. “I don’t want to have any excuses because I know many things can happen, like a fighter getting injured, a fighter getting sick or testing positive for COVID.

“I don’t want to have any excuse like I’m not training, I’m not in camp, I’m overweight, I’m not focused, whatever it is. These are the types of opportunities that may arise, and I need to take advantage of them 100 percent. If they give me a chance to enter the tournament, I’m not going to let it go to waste. That’s what I want. I want to be in that tournament so I can show my attitude during each fight. I will come out with everything and be the next champion.”

The Bellator bantamweight grand prix set for later this year consists of champion Sergio Pettis, Magomed Magomedov, James Gallagher, Raufeon Stots, Kyoji Horiguchi, Juan Archuleta, Patchy Mix and Leandro Higo.
