Jorge Masvidal doesn’t think Conor McGregor will face him next: ‘Buddy doesn’t want to scrap’

Jorge Masvidal is not so sure if Conor McGregor actually wants to fight him.

Speaking to Submission Radio, Masvidal (35-13 MMA, 12-6 UFC) said he thinks McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) may end up going in a different direction rather than opting to face him.

“I don’t know if Conor wins it means that he fights me. I really don’t know that. I don’t think so,” said Masvidal, who suggested a matchup with UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman may be more likely for his first outing in 2020. “From watching interviews, hearing things, I don’t think so. I think buddy goes a different path. Maybe I’m just looking into the future, but I don’t think so. I think I’m gonna end up making owl soup at some point this year.”

McGregor makes his return Jan. 18 against Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in a welterweight bout in Las Vegas.

Many have speculated that McGregor’s decision to compete at 170 pounds means he’s potentially eyeing a fight for the “BMF” title against Masvidal, a matchup he’s already expressed an interest in.

But McGregor has also mentioned the likes of UFC welterweight champ Usman, as well as a much desired rematch with UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

So Masvidal won’t just sit there and wait around around for him to make his decision.

“A part of me feels like, man, buddy (McGregor) doesn’t want to scrap,” Masvidal said. “Cool. OK. Next. I’m not gonna linger on it or nothing like that or force nobody to dance with me. If you don’t want to dance, cool – on to the next.”

And if McGregor does decide to go after Usman next, Masvidal says there’s no way that happens without going through him first, since he’s the current No. 1 contender.

“It’s cute, man. Conor, it’s cute. It’s just cute,” Masvidal said. “It’s basically where it’s at. You don’t do nothing at 170. You have some type of power at 155. You could skip I don’t know who and what. At 155, that’s cool. But at 170, that wouldn’t even be a conversation, just based on his record alone. He’s like 1-1 at 170. And on top of it, he’d have to go through me to get the title shot. I dictate who gets the next title shot and when. And that’s just simple. If I’m fighting Conor, then maybe somebody else gets the title shot. If I’m not fighting Conor, then I’m fighting right for this title. Well then, I’m having (expletive) owl soup.”
