Macy Chiasson: ‘I didn’t show up’ in first loss, mindset changed for UFC on ESPN+ 25

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Macy Chiasson hopes to rebound from the most difficult experience of her career thus far by scoring a win on Saturday at UFC on ESPN+ 25.

After starting her career on an undefeated run, Chiasson (5-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had a fall from grace when, as a sizable betting favorite, she dropped a unanimous decision to Lina Lansberg at UFC on ESPN+ 18 in October. It was a fight she was expected to win, but instead she struggled to get out of first gear en route to a loss.

Chiasson said she’s identified what went wrong and has taken the appropriate steps to rectify the issue. The hope, of course, is to show that growth in her next fight, which comes against Shanna Young at UFC on ESPN+ 25.

“Initially that first loss, it put a bit of a chip on my shoulder,” Chiasson told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “Like, ‘Man, I didn’t perform the way I should’ve performed.’ I don’t think it had anything to do with technique or just the fact it wasn’t me in there. I know I can perform. I know I can beat Lina. I didn’t show up. That’s what put the chip on my shoulder was the fact that it’s time to step up, I’ve got to work harder and I look at it as a positive.

“It really changed my mindset. It really did. I haven’t been through something like that. I’ve been winning like crazy, non-stop and I’m growing up in the UFC. My career was 2-0 when I started and I’m going through this in the UFC. Not a lot of people can say that and I’ve got to mature. That’s it.”

Chiasson was originally presented with the chance to bounce back in a major way with a matchup against former UFC champion Nicco Montano. Unfortunately, the bout fell apart on Monday of fight week when Montano withdrew due to an undisclosed injury.

UFC matchmakers managed to find a replacement in Young (7-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), but the Dana White’s Contender Series and Invicta FC veteran doesn’t have anywhere near Montano’s notoriety. That type of change in opposition might throw some athletes off, but Chiasson said she’s taken everything in stride.

Chiasson said she eventually hopes to be rescheduled against Montano, but right now her focus is solely on Young, who, fortunately, did not require a dramatic change in strategy.

“The game plan stays the same, so nothing really changed,” Chiasson said. “Last-minute fights like this, you really can’t. What are you really going to do? You can change up little stuff technically, but you’ve already been through a camp, you’ve already done the work. That’s why when I got the call I was pretty chill about it, because I’ve already put in the work. I’m just really fortunate that I do have someone to fight this weekend.”

UFC on ESPN+ 25 takes place at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. The entire card streams on ESPN+, with the bantamweight bout between Chiasson and Young set for the prelims.
