MMA’s week out of the cage: Old enemies Jorge Masvidal, Michael Bisping get chummy

Social media has become a significant part of the sporting landscape. But few, if any, professional sports match the level of interaction and personal access provided by MMA.

In an individual competition in which nearly every athlete is chasing the same goal of financial success and championship glory, it’s important for fighters to provide insight into their lives in order to connect with fans and gain followings.

Although the life of a fighter often can be mundane and repetitive, there still are moments of interest that take place outside the cage, ring or training room. Here are some of the most interesting of those occurrences from the past week.

B L A C K – B E L T ! What a journey it has been to reach this point as a BJJ player. I’m so competitive against myself in everything that I do, that words really can’t explain how much receiving a BJJ black-belt from sensei @mattserrabjj means to me! As I heard my name being called, I instantly felt the waterworks rushing to my eyes! 😭 (I was able to fight them off with a Kimuras and leglocks! Haha!) – No, but seriously, this is just the beginning of a new chapter. As much as I love to compete, I know the importance of lowering my protective shield of pride and/or ego so that I can have an open mind to continue to learn from everyone. THIS IS MY GOLD MEDAL! And I can’t wait for my shot to win a GOLD @UFC BELT!! 🥋 • #DidYouKnowIHaveABJJBlackBelt? #BlackBelt #BJJ #UFC #ESPN #MMA #SerraBJJ #FunkJitsu

This last weekend at the X-Games, I got to meet the man that has had the biggest influence on my life for the last 20 years. When I started skateboarding at the age 11, I was introduced to Danny Way from a skate video I got for Christmas. Since that day, learning about his life, what he’s been through and how much I could relate to him made me a big fan. My admiration for him has grown over the last 20 years as I’ve lost my father and other pivotal people in my life, as I’ve battled injuries and faced adversities throughout my career and throughout my life as well. When the going gets tough, I constantly ask myself, “What would Danny Way do?” Asking myself that question has lead me to push myself past my limits, to rise to the occasion, to see how much physical punishment I can take and keep moving forward, to see how much I can push myself even when times are as hard as they could possibly be. I even listen to Orion by Metallica as I leave for my fights, a ritual I’ve had for over 11 years, because that was the song for his part in the DC video from 2003. Well I finally got the opportunity to meet him and thank him for having such an impact on my life. It was very emotional for me but I said everything to him I always said I would if I got to meet him. Next to winning The Ultimate Fighter, this was one of the best moments in my entire life. It’s not everyday you get to meet your hero’s but if you find what you love and put everything into it, you’ll cross paths with them. My commitment to my passion lead me here and made this possible. Thank you for being you @dannyway.

UFC 300 reactions: Winning and losing fighters on social media

Since the early days when the sport was anything but a mainstream endeavor the MMA industry has thrived and survived through various websites, forums, and, perhaps most importantly, social-media platforms. Fighters interact with fans, each other and many more through the likes of X, Facebook and Instagram, which helps...

Deiveson Figueiredo: ‘I deserve to fight for the championship next’ after UFC 300
