Neiman Gracie: Bellator 274 main event win puts me ‘right there for the next title shot’

"

Neiman Gracie sees Saturday’s Bellator 274 main event against Logan Storley as a title eliminator in the welterweight division – so long as he makes it definitive.

Bellator’s 170-pound weight class is heating up in a big way. Gracie (11-2 MMA, 9-2 BMMA) fights Storley (12-1 MMA, 7-1 BMMA) this weekend, champion Yaroslav Amosov defends against Michael Page at Bellator London in May, with former champ Douglas Lima set to clash with Jason Jackson on that same card.

The only person who has a title shot guaranteed at this point is “MVP,” and everyone else will be jockeying for position. Gracie is a prominent part of that group, and he intends to make his case with a big win over Storley at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. The fight airs on Showtime following prelims on MMA Junkie.

“It all depends on how big the win will be,” Gracie told reporters during Thursday’s Bellator 274 media day. “If it’s a big stoppage and a great win, I think it puts me right there for the next title shot for sure. It also depends on how the other fights are going to play out, so we’ll just have to see what’s going to happen.”

The matchup between Gracie and Storley is special. Not only does it pit two of the organization’s highest-ranked 170-pound fighters against one another, but comes with a historic wrinkle as it’s the first five-round, non-title headliner in Bellator history.

Gracie said he relishes the additional two rounds to work, and given his family name would not have objected if it was switched to “no time limit.”

Ultimately, though, Gracie thinks this matchup is one that will allow him to shine, especially because he expects Storley to try to attack him on the ground.

“I think there will be everything involved in this fight,” Gracie said. “There will be grappling. There will be striking. It’s going to be an all-around fight. It’s hard to predict things. But judging by the way he fights, I think there’s going to be more grappling.

“This is one of the best training camps I’ve had, so I’m very confident I will win this fight. It’s hard to predict how, but I’m sure this fight will not go to a decision.”

Max Holloway’s coach breaks down matchup against ‘oversized bantamweight’ Ilia Topuria

Max Holloway’s coach believes Ilia Topuria’s style works in their favor. Holloway (26-7 MMA, 22-7 UFC) captured the BMF title with a last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje in their lightweight bout at UFC 300. He has since gone back-and-forth with featherweight champion Topuria (15-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC), who could...
