Off Guard: Yves Edwards says PFL’s old school format brings best out of fighters

LAS VEGAS – With the PFL playoffs approaching, Yves Edwards thinks fans are in for some great fights.

Week 1 of the 2019 PFL playoffs takes place Oct. 11 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. The light heavyweight and heavyweight fighters will fight twice in one night.

Edwards said this is when we’ll see what the fighters are really made of.

“Yeah, it’s old school,” Edwards told MMA Junkie. “I love going back to that – that’s what this sport is about. It’s about digging deep and bringing the best out of yourself, and that’s what you have to do. Also, the second part to that is you have to be able to change gears, change lanes. You are possibly fighting a striker in the first fight, maybe a wrestler in the second fight – which means you have to prepare for the best guy possible. You don’t necessarily prepare for one opponent. You prepare for the best guy possible at every skill set,  and then you have to show what all that preparation has led you to.”

Edwards thinks having to fight two opponents in one night, with your second opponent to be determined, means you can’t divert your attention on who’s potentially next later that night.

After all, a fighter can’t advance without notching the first win.

“Being able to fight two fights in one night, you know you have to perform,” Edwards said. “You know what you have to go out there and do, but you have to focus on the task at hand and that is when I believe fighters are at their best – when they’re in the moment. You can’t be worried about who’s going to win the other fight and who you’re going to get next.

“This is what the fans are going to see. Out of the best guys, the guys who are going to make it through this tournament, the guys that are going to end up fighting on New Year’s Eve, those are the guys that are going to be focused on the moment.”

For Javier Mendez, Islam Makhachev is more skilled than Khabib Nurmagomedov but not more dangerous. Daniel Cormier, who also trained under Mendez at American Kickboxing Academy, said UFC lightweight champion Makhachev is even more dangerous than former champ Nurmagomedov was during his prime. Mendez heavily disagrees. “OK, he’s more...
