Ovince Saint Preux stunned opponent gave him Von Flue setup at UFC on ESPN+ 18

Ovince Saint Preux was as surprised as anyone else that Michal Oleksiejczuk got tapped out with a Von Flue choke at UFC on ESPN+ 18.

Saint Preux (24-13 MMA, 12-8 UFC) earned the sixth submission in UFC history via the technique when he forced Oleksiejczuk (14-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) to tap out in the second round of their light heavyweight bout, which took place at Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, and streamed on ESPN+.

He’s earned four of those six wins, adding Oleksiejczuk’s name to a list that includes Yushin Okami, Marcos Rogerio de Lima and Nikita Krylov. Saint Preux felt there was an element of surprise to the previous wins, but said this one was different because it was essentially offered up on a silver platter.

“I don’t know what happened,” Saint Preux said on the UFC on ESPN+ 18 post-fight show. “He just gave it to me and I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?’ Like literally I’m like, ‘I’m just going to grab your wrist to see what you’re going to do.’ When I grabbed it he just gave it to me.”

The win was an important one for Saint Preux’s career. He’d lost three of four prior to UFC on ESPN+ 18, and, at 36, came questions about where he stands in the sport. If nothing else, he proved he’s still dangerous, and the performance actually came with some notable milestones in that it saw him tie UFC light heavyweight records for most wins by finish and submission.

“It’s crazy because this is my 20th fight in the UFC, and I started back in 2013,” Saint Preux said. “If I’m not mistaken, I’m the most active 205-pounder on the roster, so it makes me feel pretty good.”

Saint Preux has been active for the entirety of his UFC tenure but said now might be the time to pump the brakes – at least for a little bit. “OSP” has some lingering health issues to deal with, and he intends on putting those to rest before stepping in the cage again.

Well, unless his coaches tell him otherwise.

“We got some little injuries I’ve got to heal up,” Saint Preux said. “It depends on my coach. If he says, ‘Fight tomorrow with a broken arm,’ then I’m fighting tomorrow.”

Max Holloway’s coach breaks down matchup against ‘oversized bantamweight’ Ilia Topuria

Max Holloway’s coach believes Ilia Topuria’s style works in their favor. Holloway (26-7 MMA, 22-7 UFC) captured the BMF title with a last-second knockout of Justin Gaethje in their lightweight bout at UFC 300. He has since gone back-and-forth with featherweight champion Topuria (15-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC), who could...
