Ataev liver kick stops O’Connell for light heavyweight playoff spot

Sean O’Connell’s playoff spot couldn’t be taken away, but Bazigit Ataev clinched his spot with a big TKO win. Ataev (19-2) finished O’Connell (18-10) after a liver kick at the 3:30 mark of the first round. Ataev landed a big overhand right inside the first minute and put O’Connell on the canvas. Ataev went to the ground with him while O’Connell went into defensive mode. O’Connell got back to his feet, but Ataev kept lighting him up with uppercuts and bloodied O’Connell up. O’Connell was able to tie Ataev up to slow the pace and recover. After a brief stoppage to have a doctor look at a cut above O’Connell’s eye, Ataev went right back to work. A spinning back kick to the liver hurt O’Connell and put him on one knee. He wasn’t back on his feet for more than a couple seconds when Ataev lit him up with punches to get the stoppage and a spot in the playoffs.

Alexandre Bezerra knees his way into featherweight playoffs

Alexandre Bezerra and Magomed Idrisov spent about three minutes feeling each other out. Then, out of nowhere, Bezerra (22-5) apparently had enough. With Idrisov’s (8-3) back to the cage, Bezerra quickly pushed forward and jumped in the air with a flying knee. He landed it on the button, right on Idrisov’s jaw. Idrisov crumpled to the canvas and Bezerra got one more punch off before the ref could shut it down at the 3:24 mark of the round. The stoppage win put Bezerra into the featherweight playoffs in his first fight with the promotion – and a fight against Andre Harrison.

Handesson Ferreira tears through Paul Bradley to make playoffs

The PFL’s welterweight division might have a new star on its hands. Handesson Ferreira (12-1-1), who trains with Michael “Venom” Page and the “Pitbull” brothers, needed just 20 seconds to take out Paul Bradley (23-10) in his PFL debut and earn a spot in the playoffs. Both fighters could guarantee a playoff spot with a finish, and Ferreira left no doubt. He landed a big left kick to the body, then quickly followed it with a right and left that stunned Bradley. When Bradley hit the canvas and went to his hands and knees, Ferreira pounced on him and landed rapid-fire punches that led to a quick shut-down by referee Keith Peterson.

Despite haymakers, sub attempts Alencar and Kyle miss playoffs

Caio Alencar and Mike Kyle each could make the heavyweight playoffs with a finish. But both were gauranteed to stay home this fall with a decision. They’re both staying home. Kyle (23-16) drilled Alencar (12-3) early in the fight and knocked him to the canvas. But Alencar recovered, took Kyle to the canvas, and went to work on him in full mount with ground-and-pound, then multiple choke attempts. Kyle survived the round to see the second, though. In the second, the two threw huge bombs at each other in the first minute before Alencar landed another takedown. Alencar again got to full mount, but Kyle reversed him. After a standup, Alencar appeared gassed out. But when Kyle tried to take him down rather than strike with him, Alencar landed on top in mount – even though he barely had the energy to punch. The third was much the same, with Alencar on top, but with not enough energy to get the finish. Alencar took the decision with a pair of 30-27 scores and a 29-28 and celebrated, but won’t be fighting later this year for a chance at $1 million.

Sadibou Sy makes middleweight playoffs with KO of Caio Magalhaes

Sadibou Sy had to be worried about what Caio Magalhaes could do on the canvas, so he found an easy way around that issue. Sy (7-3) put a brilliant barrage of punches on Magalhaes (10-6) on the feet, put him on the canvas, and it was all over. Sy landed a glancing head kick, and while Magalhaes was adjusting after it, Sy blitzed him landed several short uppercuts, then put him away with a sharp right hand. The end came at the 2:06 mark of the first round. The six points clinched a middleweight playoff spot for Sy and a rematch in the postseason against Bruno Santos, who beat him by decision at PFL 3.

Sordi clinches 205 playoff spot with 16-second finish

Emiliano Sordi knew he needed a finish in the first or second round to get into the light heavyweight playoffs. So he figured might as well make it fast. It took Sordi (17-7) just 16 seconds to take out Jason Butcher (11-4) with a short right uppercut. He landed the punch, Butcher face-planted, and it was over. It was Sordi’s first PFL fight, and he made it count. The six points for the first-round finish put Sordi, who trains with Alliance MMA in San Diego, into the postseason.
