Ray Borg out of UFC on ESPN 10, Dvalisvhili now fights Combate Americas champ Lopez (UPDATE)

(Editor’s note: Update added to reflect development regarding Lopez’s contract situation with Combate Americas.)

Ray Borg is out of UFC on ESPN 10.

Borg (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC), a former UFC title challenger, has withdrawn from his fight against Merab Dvalishvili for personal reasons. Taking Borg’s place will be UFC newcomer Gustavo Lopez. The fight will take place at a 140-pound catchweight.

The UFC announced Borg’s withdrawal during Thursday’s virtual media day. Dvalishvili’s manager, Oren Hodak, and Lopez’s manager, Danny Rubenstein of Ruby Sports & Entertainment, both confirmed the new matchup to MMA Junkie shortly thereafter.

Borg seemed to indicate on Twitter that his last-minute withdrawal had something to do with his son’s well being.

Family first, see you soon son.

Lopez (11-4 MMA, 0-0), the current Combate Americas bantamweight champion, has won three straight entering his promotional debut. In 11 victories, Lopez has finished eight opponents.

Dvalishvili (10-4 MMA, 3-2 UFC) has also won three straight fights after losing his first two with the promotion. The Georgian bantamweight’s most recent fight took place at UFC on ESPN+ 25 in February, when he defeated then-UFC-ranked Casey Kenney. Dvalishvili also holds wins over Brad Katona, Terrion Ware, Raufeon Stots, and Tony Gravely.

UPDATE: After it was reported that Lopez would be stepping in to fight Dvalishvili, Combate Americas CEO Campbell McLaren tweeted that Lopez made a “bad move” because he remains under contract:

Bad move from @Gustavo11Lopez he’s under contract with @combateamericas

Lopez’s manager later acknowledged on Twitter that he “made a mistake” and officially requested his release from the promotion.

As a manager, I have made a mistake and @combateamericas does indeed have matching right to @Gustavo11Lopez and I have officially requested his release for him to fight this weekend in the UFC in Las Vegas. @campbellcombate

UPDATE: McClaren issued a statement to ESPN, saying Combate Americas would allow Lopez to fight this Saturday for the UFC.
