UFC 221 play-by-play and live results

Join us for live play-by-play and official results for UFC 221 beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Perth Arena in the Australian city of Perth, and the main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, former middleweight champion Luke Rockhold (16-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) takes on Yoel Romero (12-2 MMA, 8-1 UFC) for an interim 185-pound title. However, only Rockhold is eligible to win the belt since Romero missed weight for the short-notice bout.

In the co-feature, Curtis Blaydes (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) meets veteran heavyweight Mark Hunt (13-11-1 MMA, 8-5-1 UFC).

Luke Jumeau vs. Daichi Abe

Round 1 – Abe winds up working to the center, and they trade kicks from range. Abe quick on the trigger early, but Jumeau happy to counter as he retreats. Abe still working the legs and adding punches behind it. Big right over the top for Jumeau. Another big shot staggers Abe a bit. Jumeau showing patience with his follow. Jumeau catches a kick from his opponent, but Abe drives in a nice right hand. Halfway through the round. Abe still pressing, and he lands a big right hand. Jumeau forced to cover as Abe unleashes a barrage of strikes that are mostly blocked. Abe finally backs away. Jumeau drives forward, but Abe with a big right hand. Jumeau hurt and covering. Abe again trying to unleash a flurry of shots. Jumeau kneeling but does work back to his feet through the strikes. On the restart, Jumeau pushes an off-balance Abe to the ground, but the Japanese fighter pops back to his feet and lands another big right hand. They trade punches on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives a fun first to Abe, 10-9.

Round 2 – Jumeau out quickly with strikes and then drives through with a takedown. Abe to the floor, but he’s quick to his feet and they two fighters break away. Both men looking content to trade right now, but it’s Jumeau’s face that’s busted up and bleeding from the nose. Both men slowing their output a bit. Jumeau lands a nice right hand over the top, and he’s digging to the body at every opportunity. Jumeau starting to find his range a bit, and Abe taking a few deep breaths, looking to be visibly fatigued. Two minutes remain. Jumeau with a crisp two-punch combination. He’s starting to land more and more frequently. Abe firing back but landing much less effectively than before. Abe dropping his hands. He’s tired. Round ends on the feet, and MMAjunkie gives it to Jumeau, 10-9.

Round 3 – Abe with a nice kick to the body to start. A second scores, as well. He needs to better this pace in this round. Abe busy early. Jumeau answers with a clean right over the top. High kick scores for Jumeau. Superman punch behind it. Abe again drops his hands and takes a deep breath. Jumeau complains of an eyepoke, though replays look like the damage came from a clean right hand. Blood streaming around the left eye, and the doctor is brought in to take a look. Jumeau says he’s seeing a little blurry, but we’re going to fight on. Jumeau with a night right hand on the restart, and a kick to the body. High kick blocked from Jumeau. Ninety seconds left. Abe just not doing enough despite having a wounded opponent. Big right for Jumeau. He’s chopping the legs a bit. A late low kick buckles his opponent. Jumeau punches until the bell. MMAjunkie gives the final round to Jumeau, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28.

Teruto Ishihara vs. Jose Quinonez

Round 1 – Quinonez with an early low kick. Ishihara looks like he wants to press the action. Quinonez instead changes levels and drives through for an early takedown. Ishihara scrambles to the fence, works to his knees and then stands. Quinonez pressing in from the outside as they battle for position. Ishihara trying to break free, and they exchange some knees in tight. Quinonez trips Ishihara to his knees and eventually slides over to the back. Slick move. Quinonez looking for the rear-naked choke. Ishihara looks comfortable as he defends. Lots of time left. Quinonez has the body triangle in place while Ishihara tries to peel his opponent away. Ishihara spins and is able to work free, and referee Marc Goddard has to call time to allow Quinonez to replace his cup. Ishihara looking to be aggressive on the restart, though Quinonez is able to push inside and slow things down. Ishihara separates and lands a big left hand to close. Quinonez wobbled right at the bell. Still, MMAjunkie gives the first to Quinonez, 10-9.

Round 2 – Quick start for both men, with Ishihara the aggressor. Quinonez keeping his right hand high in defense. Ishihara adding in kicks to all levels, as well. Quinonez with a low kick in return. Quinonez working on the lead leg and then kicks the body, as well. Quinonez switching stances and looking for angles. Ishihara shoots inside and successfully drags the action to the floor. Quinonez has no issues standing up and pulling free. Quinonez continues to work on the leg. Ninety seconds left. Less exchanges between the two, but Ishihara controlling the center and looking to attack. Ishihara also kicking low while his opponent switches stances. Left hands traded, and Quinonez is again rocked, and he wobbles slowly to the floor. Quick recovery just before the bell. MMAjunkie gives this on to Ishihara, 10-9.

Round 3 – Quick embrace to start the third. Ishihara again takes the center. Quinonez moving well and attacks the legs from the start. Quinonez works inside and tries to press the action to the cage, but Ishihara able to wiggle free and prevent the clinch. Low kicks traded. Quinonez getting the best of these low strikes. Ishihara with a nice left hand on the counter. Ishihara busier with his hands, looking to land that big left once again. Two minutes remaining, and the fight seems to hang in the balance. Ishihara shoots inside for a takedown, but Quinonez sprawls well and returns to the feet. Punches traded as the final minute starts. It’s close right now, but Ishihara has been finishing strong in previous round. Quinonez’s low kicks his best work. They clinch briefly, but nothing there. Round ends on the feet. Close call. MMAjunkie leans slightly toward Quinonez, 10-9, giving him the fight 29-28.

Ross Pearson vs. Mizuto Hirota

Round 1 – Pearson with a nice low kick to the thigh. Hirota at distance but scores with a lengthy jab. Pearson scores with a few early left hands. Hirota’s hands low, and he’s getting caught a little bit in the early going. Hirota with a nice low kick of his own. He lands with a leaping left, as well. Hirota starting to find his range a little better halfway through the round. But Pearson slipping and moving well and lands another crisp left hand. Pearson more active on his feet, and he is sharp early. Hirota tries to drive in for the takedown, but Pearson deal with it well. Hirota having some success, but Pearson countering well. He misses a flying knee in the final seconds. MMAjunkie gives the first to Pearson, 10-9.

Round 2 – Hirota with a low kick to open. Pearson still moving well and returning fire with success. Hirota lands with a jab and follows with a low kick. Another kick to the leg scores. Pearson taking those low kicks and trying to answer back with punches over the top. Pearson lands clean. Both fighters landing, but Pearson doing a better job of adding combinations rather than just single blows. Still, Hirota does have quite a bit of volume. Hirota cut under the right eye, and the blood is splattered on his face a bit. Hirota still chopping at the leg. Pearson doing an excellent job of slipping and countering. The left continues to find a home. Final minute. Hirota pressing forward in the closing seconds, and a big right hand buckles Pearson’s knees. Close round, but MMAjunkie leans slightly toward Hirota, 10-9.

Round 3 – Hirota still having success with the quick jab. He’s also bleeding from his nose even at the start of the frame. Pearson with a nice jab and right to the body behind it. Hirota keeps working the leg, and Pearson’s leg swelling. Solid pace from both fighters in the final round. Pearson landing the more significant shots, but Hirota keeping his volume high. Hirota’s jab and low kick landing at will, but Pearson is countering with power shots. Hirota’s face a mess right now. Blood is smearing, and his right eye swelling a bit. Final minute, and they’re both trading shots in the pocket. Pearson’s right eye now busted up a bit, too. That left hand has been landing. Pearson lands a high kick and a front kick to the body. Round ends on the feet. Nice scrap. MMAjunkie leans toward Pearson in the final round, 10-9, awarding him the fight 29-28. Close.

Jussier Formiga vs. Ben Nguyen

Round 1 – Nguyen presses forward with punches to start, but Formiga wraps him up in the clinch. Nguyen able to circle out when they move to the cage, and he finally is able to work free. Formiga immediately back inside and using a strong clinch to keep tight. Nguyen seems comfortable there and lands a few knees before backing away to reset. Nguyen looking to strike on the feet, though Formiga closing the distance at every opportunity. Nguyen dealing with the grappling well to start. He throws a kick and then defends a takedown attempt, though Formiga stays with the effort and is able to trip the action to the floor, landing immediately in side control. Formiga controlling the positioning and then has a lighting quick step into mount. Nguyen trying to buck and roll. Formiga staying on top, but Nguyen keeping him from doing too much in terms of offense. Still, the dominant position leaves no doubt. Formiga finishes the round on top and takes the round on the MMAjunkie card, 10-9.

Round 2 – Nguyen again moving forward, looking to strike and stay away from his opponent’s grappling game. Early exchanges show Nguyen moving well, and a cut opens up at Formiga’s hairline, sending blood trickling down his face. Formiga does get into the clinch and presses to the cage, but Nguyen able to slip free. Excellent awareness and movement from Nguyen. Formiga with a spinning kick to the body. Spinning backfist for Formiga. Nguyen with a kick, and Formiga just drives through it and takes the action to the canvas with a little more than two minutes remaining. Quick step past the right leg for Formiga. Nguyen gets his hands inside and creates some room, scrambling deftly to his feet. One minute remains. Nguyen getting the best on the feet. When he can stay out of the clinch, it’s beneficial. Closing seconds, and Formiga’s right hand pokes the eye. We get a quick timeout to address the eye, but there’s no damage. Restart leads to the end of the round immediately after. MMAjunkie gives it to Nguyen, 10-9. Very close.

Round 3 – Plenty of pace from both men to start the third. Nguyen darting in and out of range with punches. Formiga swinging back in the pocket right now, not necessarily forcing the takedown. Nguyen with a high kick, and Nguyen lands a spinning backfist. Brutal, and Nguyen crashes to the canvas. Formiga follows with punches and then jumps on the back. Nguyen in trouble. Formiga immediately locks in the rear-naked choke. Nguyen tries to fight the hands, but he’s trapped. The squeeze is tight, and Nguyen’s arm goes limp, with referee Peter Hickmott right on top of the action and pulling Formiga away. Stunning finish.

Alex Volkanovski vs. Jeremy Kennedy

Round 1 – Volkanovski takes the center and scores with a low kick. Kennedy working on the outside and looking to use his range. Brief clinch for Volkanovski, and he presses the action to the cage. Kennedy defends against the cage as they battle for position, but Volkanovski pulls him off the fence and drags him to the floor. Kennedy against the fence, so not a lot of room to work. Volkanovski looking to posture up, and he does land a few solid left hands. Kennedy trapping the right arm, but Volkanovski able to get that left hand free and just drive it into his opponent’s face. Volkanovski slams Kennedy’s head into the canvas. He’s getting some momentum on his ground-and-pound. Punches now becoming elbows. Kennedy is moving well, looking for something from his back, but he’s being overwhelmed. Punches and forearms from the top. Kennedy in half-guard, but he’s had nothing in reply. Kennedy finally gets to his feet in the final seconds, but he doesn’t get any offense. MMAjunkie gives the first to Volkanovski, 10-8.

Round 2 – Kennedy laces out a few punches from rage. He wants to attack from distance, but Volkanovski slips under and drives him quickly to the canvas. Volkanovski already on top again in the opening round. Kennedy much quicker to get to his feet, and he’s able to get some separation after eating a knee to the belly. Kennedy changes levels and looks for a takedown, but it’s Volkanovski who’s able to reverse things and get to top position. Punches again for Volkanovski, and they are landing firm. Kennedy is active underneath, looking for options or a chance to escape, but Volkanovski is just overwhelming from the top. Punches and elbows are raining down in the final seconds. Referee Marc Goddard watching closely, but Kennedy keeps moving. Still, the offense is relentless, and he just beats the bell to get a TKO finish. Incredibly impressive win.
