UFC 237 play-by-play and live results

MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 237 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET (3:30 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

In the main event, women’s 115-pound champion Rose Namajunas (8-3 MMA, 6-2 UFC) puts her belt up against Brazilian challenger Jessica Andrade (19-6 MMA, 10-4 UFC). In the co-main event, Jared Cannonier (11-4 MMA, 4-4 UFC) has the biggest fight of his career when he meets former longtime middleweight champ Anderson Silva (34-9 MMA, 17-5 UFC).

Current fight

Thiago Alves vs. Laureano Staropoli

Round 1 – Staropoli the bigger man and staying at distance to start. He leaps forward with a kick that’s blocked. Staropoli kicking to all levels, landing clean to the legs. Alves tries to return fire but eats a counter right. Alves a little hesitant with all of Staropoli’s movement. He’s continuously switching stances and throwing from odd angles. Alves defending well, but Staropoli has the volume of attacks, and it’s keeping Alves at bay. Alves trying to score with well-timed counters. He is finding success with punches, but Staropoli’s volume of kicks from range is making him the busier guy. Nice right hand at the end for Alves, but MMA Junkie gives the round to Staropoli, 10-9.

Results

Talita Bernardo vs. Viviane Araujo

Round 1 – Araujo takes the center and looks light on her feet to start. They trade low kicks early. Araujo, who is fighting up two divisions, clearly the quicker fighter, but Bernardo looks much stronger. Slick movement from Araujo, and she lands a big kick to the body. Quick hands up top for Araujo, and she kicks to the legs again. Araujo with quick, straight punches, and she’s having some success. Bernardo with more powerful blows. Araujo continues to slap at the legs, but it’s causing some marking on her opponent’s legs. Bernardo lands a big left hand up top. Araujo catches a kick and trips Bernardo to the floor but doesn’t follow. Araujo sticking and moving in impressive fashion. Araujo shoots forward in the final minute but winds up falling to her back. Araujo slips to side control and does move to the back, but it’s too late in the round, which comes to an end with her in a dominant spot. MMA Junkie gives the first to Araujo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Bernardo looking to pressure a bit to start the second, but Araujo able to slide away with quick moment. Araujo with a big right hand. She catches another kick to trip Bernardo, but Araujo again refuses to follow. Bernardo crawls to her feet and is again throwing heavy leather, but it’s the timing of Araujo that is impressive. When Bernardo lands, it’s powerful, but Araujo with the volume. Bernardo changes levels and drives forward. Great defense from Araujo. She stays on her feet and slips around to the back, and Bernardo has to bail to not give up the neck. Low kick for Araujo, and Bernardo returns fire with a three-punch combination that lands. Araujo decides to shoot inside and does score the takedown. Final minute. Araujo postures and lands a few punches, but she decides to back away to the feet. Big punches from Bernardo to close. They landed. Araujo might be slowing a bit, but MMA Junkie does give her the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – Bernardo comes out firing punches. Araujo counters with a clean right hand. Araujo has some energy back. They’re trading, and Araujo lands a clean right. Bernardo crashes to the floor. Brutal shot to the chin, and that’s a one-punch knockout. Impressive.

Raoni Barcelos vs. Carlos Huachin

Round 1 – Barcelos works to the center of the cage, though both men are patient to start. Barcelos with a low kick, and Huachin fires off a huge left hand from the southpaw stance that misses. Huachin definitely keeping that left hand cocked, and he rifles it off when given a chance. Every shot comes at full speed. Barcelos moving well for now, avoiding the power of his opponent for the most part, but he certainly needs to be cautious. Barcelos with a right hand. Barcelos avoiding well, but Huachin the one throwing the most strikes right now. Two minutes left. Barcelos leaps forward with a punch, but Huachin also avoiding well. Barcelos needs to pick up the pace a bit. Barcelos with a few big kicks that are blocked but do come at full force. Huachin continues to lace out that big left hand. Both men throwing at full speed. Fun round, but MMA Junkie gives it to Huachin, 10-9.

Round 2 – Barcelos comes out firing low kicks. He rips off punches and tries to move inside, but Huachin able to slip away. Barcelos pressing and tries again to clinch, but Huachin pushes him off. Barcelos continues to press and slips and fires a big right hand that sends Huachin to the canvas. Barcelos follows and looks to punch. Huachin trying to cover up, but Barcelos is active with punches. Barcelos briefly traps the left arm and fires right hand. Huachin is not giving up, but Barcelos is trapping him on the canvas and firing. Barcelos briefly moves to the back but can’t get the choke. He slips around and looks for a guillotine, forcing Huachin to settle back on the canvas. More strikes from Barcelos. He is all over his opponent right now, but Huachin showing real durability. Another quick look at the choke, but it’s not there. Barcelos in mount and smothering his opponent. Huachin rakes the eyes a few times trying to create space. Barcelos teases an arm-triangle, but he lets it go and stays in mount. Barcelos finally turns back to the striking. Punches and elbows coming in. Final few seconds, and referee Eduardo Herdy decides to wave it off. Might have been a bit early, with Huachin still trying to move, but there was no question he had taken an extended beating.

Luana Carolina vs. Priscila Cachoeira

Round 1 – Carolina with a kick to the body, but Cachoeira catches it and returns fire with a big right hand. Cachoeira presses forward and lands another big right. Cachoeira grabs hold and tries to stay tight. She grabs a clinch and drives in a few knees before Cachoeira can pull away and reset. They trade right hands in the pocket. Cachoeira is showing little concern for her opponent’s striking, just walking forward and firing big punches. Carolina is moving well on the outside, and she’s countering with knees as her opponent moves forward. Cachoeira chasing around the cage. She’s struggling to cut off the cage. Cachoeira grabs her opponent’s top and tries to swing in close. They both land again. It’s brutal exchanges when they do stop and trade. Carolina cut under the right eye. Cachoeira catches a kick and sweeps her opponent to the floor but lets her stand. Cachoeira running forward and throwing punches. It’s relentless. Round ends on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it to Cachoeira, 10-9.

Round 2 – More aggression from Cachoeira to start. It’s vicious work, just walking forward and looking to brawl. Carolina is retreating well and countering with punches and kicks. High kick lands clean, and Cachoeira slowly falls to the canvas. Carolina rushes to the ground and tries to attack with a triangle. She switches to the arm and seems to have it extended, but Cachoeira pulls free. So tough. She climbs to the feet, and as she’s rising, Carolina fires an illegal knee that lands to the temple. Referee Fernando Portella calls time and checks on Cachoeira but does not deduct a point. We restart, and it’s clear that Carolina is the fresher fighter. High kick lands again, but Cachoeira will not stop walking forward. Carolina with a combination of punches. The high kick lands again. Carolina grabs a guillotine on the feet and falls to the canvas. She rolls to the top but can’t get the squeeze. Still, Carolina is able to move to mount. Cachoeira tries to slip out the back door, but Carolina adjusts and gets an inverted triangle in place. She punches as well. Still, Cachoeira gets out of the hold and to her feet. Too damn tough. Round ends, and MMA Junkie gives it to Carolina, 10-8.

Round 3 – Cachoeira clearly tired but still walking froward. Carolina staying light on her feet and retreating and countering. She cleanly lands a spinning backfist, but Cachoeira won’t go away. Cachoeira walking forward and lands a left hand. She’s lost some zip, no doubt. Cachoeira catches a kick but is tagged with a backfist. Still, Cachoeira lands a big punch of her own. Knee from Carolina. Cachoeira is non-stop with her forward movement, but Carolina continues to deal with it well. Carolina finally starting to slow a bit on her feet. Two minutes left. The taller Carolina again grabs the guillotine on the feet, but she stays upright and lets go. Carolina’s knees and kicks continue to land. Cachoeira incredibly tough, and she is having moments, but the real volume is from Carolina. Cachoeira moving forward until the very end. Crazy fight. MMA Junkie gives the third to Carolina, 10-9, awarding her the fight 29-27.

B.J. Penn vs. Clay Guida

Round 1 – Guida jabbing on the outside and leans an uppercut. He’s aggressive early and kicks the leg. Penn swinging back, as well. Penn holding the center and just misses on an uppercut. Guida lands a nice left hand. Both ben content to box right now. Guida kicks the legs and then throws one up high that’s partially blocked. Guida starting to find range with his jab. Penn showing great head movement, but Guida certainly the busier man. Guida continues to work the lead leg. Guida winging wild hooks, but Penn answering with straight punches. Penn lands a lead left hook. Jab scores up the middle. Penn holding the center and lands a nice uppercut. Penn is having some moments. He’s scoring late. Close round. MMA Junkie leans slightly toward Penn, 10-9.

Round 2 – Guida out quickly and fires the jab. Penn answers with the same. Guida certainly the more mobile man, and he lands a left hand. Penn more stationary in the center, but he’s showing some excellent timing with his punches. Penn staying with the jab. Guida kicks the leg again. He’s very effective with that. Right hand scores for Penn. Another right lands. Guida starting to hesitate a bit because he’s getting stung when he presses forward. Then Penn jab is landing, and he’s got an uppercut behind it. Guida high kick again partially lands. He shoots forward and drives the action to the cage. Penn defends well against the fence, and Guida lets go to start striking before pressing inside again. Penn finally able to slip away, and he’s quickly back to the jab. He does seem to be slowing a bit. High kick for Guida stuns Penn. Guida sees it after a stumble and pushes forward. He punches and then grabs Penn and throws him to the floor. Round ends there, and MMA Junkie gives it to Guida, 10-9.

Round 3 – Guida rushes forward. Leg kick scores. Left hand and uppercut for Guida. Penn is still wobbly. He throws a jab that lands, but Guida flurries with a few punches that have Penn staggered. Guida pushes inside and presses the action to the fence. Penn against the cage and defending, but it’s obvious he’s exhausted. Guida content to work from the clinch. He’s dirty boxing a bit. He finally pulls away, and a right hand drops Penn, who pops right back up. Guida goes back to the clinch. He’s driving the action to the fence and grinding. He finally backs away and lands three punches before moving back inside. Guida lands with more punches in tight then clinches again. It’s just all Guida right now. Final minute, and Penn does go back to the center. He’s got a few punches left in the tank, but Guida is winging big shots, as well. Fight ends on the feet. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Guida, 10-9, and awards him the fight 29-28.

Warlley Alves vs. Sergio Moraes

Round 1 – Alves throws a few front kicks that miss. High kick blocked. Both men looking to strike in the early going. Low kick lands for Alves. Second one is checked. Moraes with a kick that comes up short. Alves more success kicking the legs. Moraes trying to punch from range, but Alves moving well. It’s a moderate pace from both men, but Alves really succeeding in attacking the legs. Moraes is countering at times, but he’s taking some damage, and it’s visible. Moraes winging punches from range, but he comes up short. Moraes complains of an eyepoke, and we take a quick break. Rapid punches on the restart. Moraes with a low kick of his own. Leaping knee from Alves misses, but he lands a right hand over it. Round ends on the feet, and MMA Junkie leans toward Alves, 10-9.

Round 2 – Alves right back to the legs. Moraes trying to push past them to get inside, but the left leg is battered. Moraes forced to fire wild punches from range, and he’s struggling to land clean. Alves lands with a straight punch down the middle. Alves kick lands again to the thigh. He’s trying again to go high, but Moraes is able to block those. Moraes does land a nice counter left. Alves just cruising though. He’s not concerned with the strikes from his opponent. Alves lands with a kick to the body. Right hand to the body. Moraes keeping himself as safe as possible, but the low kicks are hurting him. Round ends on the feet, and MMA Junkie again gives it to Alves, 10-9.

Round 3 – Moraes moving forward in the third like a man behind on the cards. Alves with a nasty left to the body. Alves with more kicks to the legs. Big shots landing clean. That initial burst from Moraes is gone. Alves throwing big punches up top, and then again digging to the legs. Moraes looks like he’s about to collapse from the punishment to the leg. He can’t really get anything going. He’s showing toughness, but he’s basically stuck on the cage. Leaping knee from Alves blocked, but he’s in tight and throws an uppercut that puts Moraes’ lights out. Vicious finish.

Thiago Moises vs. Kurt Holobaugh

Round 1 – Moises immediately kicks the leg. Punches traded, but Moises immediately back to the leg. Holobaugh drives forward, punching his way into a clinch. He drops for the single. Moises defending against the fence and tries to grab the guillotine. Not there, so he lets go, and Holobaugh backs away. Both men firing heavy leather on the restart. Holobaugh again punches and then drives into a clinch, but Moises defends well and strikes as they break. Moises then shoots inside and scores with a beautiful takedown. Holobaugh tries to grab a guillotine as they fall, but Moises lands in half-guard. Holobaugh has to let go. Moises comfortable on top and enjoying the dominant spot. Holobaugh working well on his back to avoid any real damage while there, though. He’s trying to turn for an arm, but it’s not there. Moises grinds away until the bell. MMA Junkie give it to Moises, 10-9.

Round 2 – Moises with a quick right and a front kick to the face. Holobaugh somehow walks right through it and moves in tight. Moises backs away before returning with a great takedown attempt that drives the action to the floor. Holobaugh in guard but on his back again. Moises moves to half and then grabs a guillotine when Holobaugh tries to posture. Holobaugh keeps working and gets to his feet, but Moises stays tight to start before backing away. Halfway through the round. Holobaugh trades a bit but then shoots from range. Moises easily shoves it aside. Holobaugh tries to grab the guillotine on the feet, but Moises is able to back away. Holobaugh with a few hooks that land clean. Moises briefly stunned, and he does have a few cuts near the eyes. Holobaugh shoots again. Not there. Moises on the attack with strikes when they break. Holobaugh swings back. He’s having some success on the feet when he throws. MMA Junkie gives the round to Moises, 10-9.

Round 3 – Big strikes from Moises to open. Punches land clean, and a big shot to the legs scores. Holobaugh showing toughness, but he can’t take those. Moises again drives the action to the canvas. Holobaugh active on his back again, and they return to the feet. Moises wastes little time putting the action back on the canvas. Holobaugh scrambles up, and Moises tries to lock in the choke. It looks very deep, but Holobaugh battles to stay safe, and Moises lets it free to keep dominant position. Holobaugh keeps working and turns, and he’s now driving forward against a seated Moises. They work there briefly, and Moises stands. He grabs Holobaugh, lifts him in the air and slams him to the floor. Solid control from Moises is going to see him cruise to the win. He punches away until the bell. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Moises, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Ryan Spann

Round 1 – Spann pressing froward to open, looking to strike. Nogueira happy to swing back early, but Spann changes levels and drives the action to the floor. Great takedown, and he passes the leg and immediately sets up and arm-triangle choke. It looks dangerous, but Nogueira is able to works his way through ti and back to the feet. Excellent escape. Both men trading punches on the restart. Spann thinks takedown again, but it’s not there. Nogueira lands a clean left, but Spann answers back. He tags Nogueira, who’s dazed. Spann sees it and attacks. Combination lands, including a left uppercut that sends him to the floor. Two punches on the ground, and this fight is over.

Irene Aldana vs. Bethe Correia

Round 1 – Aldana moves laterally on the outside as Correia is stationary in the center. Aldana jabs and then moves again. She’s staying at range to start. Correia briefly grabs a leg, but Aldana pulls away. Aldana looking to stick and move right now, and she’s having success with long, quick punches. Correia trying to counter, but she’s having a tough time with the speed. Aldana just lacing out straight punches and then looking to slip the counters. Correia having some success with her powerful punches, but the volume is favoring Aldana. Jabs and right hands landing for Aldana, and Correia struggling to track her opponent down. Correia trying to press late in the frame, looking to brawl, but Aldana moves well and delivers punches while she retreats. MMA Junkie gives the first to Aldana, 10-9.

Round 2 – Correia a little more aggressive to start the second. She’s looking to get in close against a longer opponent. She’s having some success early, and Aldana is forced to get out and reset. Overhand rights finding the mark for Correia. Aldana still the quicker fighter, but Correia with solid timing to land her big shots. She’s walking through Aldana’s punches to land her own, and it’s working. Aldana still landing frequently, but Correia is countering very well. Right hand lands clean. Correia’s strength is evident in the clinch. They break, and Correia continues to score with the big overhand right. Correia ducks for a takedown, but it’s not there. They finish on the feet, and MMA Junkie leans toward Correia, 10-9.

Round 3 – Correia with a low kick but she’s countered over the top. Aldana with a high kick. Right hand lands. Aldana busier to start this round, and Correia is trying to counter with those big right hands. Aldana with combinations, while Correia is answering back with single blows. Correia unquestionably the more powerful fighter. She’s starting to attack a little more as the round unfolds. She’s having to deal with with the volume. Correia shoots inside, and Aldana is able to counter and land on top. She switches quickly to the back and then rolls out to the armbar. Fantastic transition and a quick tap. Fantastic finish.
