UFC 238 play-by-play and live results

CHICAGO – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 238 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:15 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at United Center in Chicago. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+/UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, flyweight champion Henry Cejudo (14-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) takes on Marlon Moraes (22-5-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) for the vacant bantamweight title. Cejudo is trying to become the fourth fighter in UFC history to hold two belts at the same time. And in the co-feature, women’s flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko (16-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) puts her belt on the line for the first time when she takes on challenger Jessica Eye (14-6 MMA, 4-5 UFC).

Current fight

Jimmie Rivera vs. Petr Yan

Round 1 – Rivera misses an early low kick. Yan stalking from the center. He slaps the leg with a kick. Rivera moving on the outside and slips a strike, but picks out a right hand. Yan misses a huge right over the top. Rivera inside and thinks takedown with the sudden position but can’t get it. Yan holding the center and looking to tee up big punches. He misses another right hand. Rivera moving well and avoiding the bog shots. Yan short on a pair of punches. Rivera’s speed working well for him so far. Yan leaping with strikes from range but not really finding the mark. Rivera not doing a ton in reply, but he’s avoiding any of Yan’s famed offense. Low kick from Rivera. Yan shoots inside and briefly controls the leg but can’t get the fight to the floor. Yan with a kick to the chest. Yan dives for a takedown. Wild scramble with slick Rivera defense, but they move back to the feet. Yan with a left hand in the final seconds that drops Rivera. Flash knockdown, and Rivera survives, but that steals the round on the MMA Junkie card for Yan, 10-9.

Katlyn Chookagian vs. Joanne Calderwood

Round 1 – Calderwood opens with a quick low kick, then flashes one high. Chookagian answers back with a few kicks of her own. Back and forth in the pocket to start. Both women using kicks as the primary weapon for now. Calderwood with a right hand over the top. Chookagian showing good head movement on the outside, and she slips and counters. Calderwood reaching with a jab, as well. Chookagian just misses with a high kick over the top. Calderwood moves forward but eats a knee up the middle. Low kicks traded. Calderwood continues to chop at the legs. The pace remains strong. Both women happy to trade shots back and forth. Chookagian’s legs reddened. Calderwood has a big mark on the back of her thigh, as well.Calderwood with a spinning backfist in the final seconds, and Chookagian does the same. MMA Junkie leans toward Calderwood, 10-9.

Round 2 – Calderwood continues with the high pace to start. Chookagian there to answer, but Calderwood trips her to the floor. Chookagian doesn’t stay there, climbing quickly back to the feet. Calderwood stays tight, but they push back to the center. Chookagian swinging with heavy right hands. They move into a clinch briefly. Calderwood’s right cheek showing some wear. Chookagian’s lead leg is absolutely battered. Calderwood changes levels and drives forward, but Chookagian is able to stand her up and move away. Calderwood’s best weapon continues to be the low kicks. She catches one fo Chookagian’s and sweeps her to the floor. Chookagian tries to secures a wrist. Not there, but she locks a triangle around the body and holds tight. She tries again for an armbar in the closing seconds, but Calderwood stays secure until the bell. Another close round. MMA Junkie leans slightly toward Chookagian.

Round 3 – Pace continues to be strong at the start of the third. Chookagian firing that big right hand. She’s having some success. Calderwood still chipping the leg. She’s punching, as well, but the more powerful blows seem to be coming from Chookagian. Calderwood continues to chop at the legs. She catches another Chookagian kick and trips her to the floor, but this time she backs away. Chookagian with a big right on the restart. Two minutes left. Scores could be anywhere. The action is tight even now. Chookagian seeming to have the more powerful blows, but Calderwood keeping her volume high. Chookagian misses on a high kick, and Calderwood is dropping her hands and wagging her tongue, taunting in the final seconds. Chookagian pressing but having trouble finding the mark. Fight ends in a flurry. MMA Junkie again leans slightly toward Chookagian, 10-9, awarding her the fight 29-28.

Grigorii Popov vs. Eddie Wineland

Round 1 – Wineland rushes forward and starts firing punches. Popov backs away and circles to the left. Wineland trying to pressure. Popov flashes out a few kicks. Wineland lands a big straight right. Popov smiles and continues to circle left. Wineland leaping forward with punches, and he’s finding the mark. Popov cut near his left eye. Wineland setting up right in front of his opponent and flinging punches. Popov able to grab a quick clinch and drive in a knee. Wineland shakes it off and continues his pursuit. Popov flicks out a few sneaky right hands. He’s losing, but he actually seems to be settling in a bit. Blood streaming down Popov’s face. Wineland pressing, crowd cheering his name. Wineland right hand lands clean. Popov staggers a bit but stays upright. He’s tough, but he’s outgunned right now. Right hand lands for Wineland. Still, Popov swinging back. Round ends on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it to Wineland, 10-9.

Round 2 – Wineland out quickly again. Popov standing in the pocket and swinging back. He drops Wineland to a knee. Crazy start to the round. Frantic pace, and Popov is trying to continue the attack. Wineland changes levels but can’t get the takedown. Popov with a kick to the body. He’s finding range with his punches, as well. Popov the aggressor now. Wineland not giving up his approach. Halfway through the round, and Wineland starting to have some success again. Wineland drives through with a takedown, but Popov rolls through and back to the feet. Popov smiles, and the fighters shake hands and continue. Wineland still pressing, and he lands a clean right. Popov staggered. Wineland withs gin again. Popov falls to the canvas. Popov tries to lock up a choke, but Popov battles out of it. Incredible. Back to the feet. Wineland still pressing. He lands a huge right hand, and Popov topples to the floor. he covers up, and Wineland unleashes a flurry of punches to seal the result. Crazy fight.

Bevon Lewis vs. Darren Stewart

Round 1 – Stewart with an early low kick that trips Lewis. A second one brings him to a knee. Stewart rushes forward, and they move to the clinch. Stewart knees the leg and controls in the clinch. Lewis switches off the cage, but Stewart turns it again immediately. Battle for position against the fence. It’s turning back and forth. Stewart with a few punches inside. It’s a gritty battle right now. Lewis gets to the outside and briefly pulls away but Stewart fires a punch in tight. Lewis trying to pressure, but Stewart’s power is causing some issues. Stewart walking forward, but he’s showing patience at range right now. A low kick again trips Lewis, though he pops right back up. Stewart fires punches at the end of the round, even a little after the bell, forcing Marc Goddard to pull him away. MMA Junkie gives the first to Stewart, 10-9.

Round 2 – Stewart opens with low kick again. He’s the aggressor to open. Lewis a little hesitant on the outside. Stewart spinning backfist blocked. Stewart feeling very comfortable, shuffling his feet as he moves. He fires a right hand, but Lewis is able to slip past and move to the clinch. Stewart battles his way free, staying upright. Stewart pressing, but Lewis does land a right hand and a glancing knee. Stewart can’t get careless. Stewart’s offense slowing a bit. He seems to be seeking the one perfect shot. Lewis not offering much from his side, either. Stewart’s punches the more powerful blows, but neither man really letting the hands go. Crowd getting restless in the final minute. They do flurry a bit at the end. MMA Junkie gives it again to Stewart, 10-9.

Round 3 – Both men come out with a little sense of urgency, it seems. Stewart controlling the center and loading up on the big shots. Lewis respecting the power and is hesitant to really engage. Stewart missing with big shots. They move into the clinch. Lewis gets to the outside, but Stewart able to pull away. Still not a ton of offense. Stewart with a low kick. Crowd booing. Lewis tries to drop and change levels. Stewart turns, and his back is exposed. He’s able to turn inside and then move to a controlling position. Just not a ton of action, and the crowd is hating it. One minute left. They continue to work from the clinch. Lewis with a few knees inside, but nothing of consequence. Stewart with a punch at the bell, and Goddard stops another after. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Stewart, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27.

Yan Xiaonan vs. Angela Hill

Round 1 – Xiaonan with a low kick to start. Hill moving laterally on the outside. Xiaonan drives forward with punches and then resets in the middle. Xiaonan certainly the aggressor to start, but Hill moving well to avoid any real damage. Punches traded in the pocket. Brief clinch from Hill, but they pull apart. Xiaonan very busy. Low kick lands. Punches coming in relentless fashion. Hill with a leaping Superman that lands, and then she grabs hold and drags the action to the floor. Xiaonan working rubber guard from her back. Hill tries to posture, but Xiaonan works a leg inside and kicks her away. Back on the feet with two minutes left. Hill again tries to wrestle the action to the floor, but she winds up on the bottom. Guard for Hill. She’s trying to secure a limb. Xiaonan punching when she can.Hill gets the triangle in place, but she can’t quite get the squeeze. She keeps adjusting, pulling down on the head at the bell. Xiaonan survives, but MMA Junkie gives the round to Hill, 10-9.

Round 2 – Xiaonan comes out swinging, and a high kick pushes Hill to the floor. Xiaonan rushes forward with punches, but Hill gets back to the feet and is bale to pull away. Xiaonan again the aggressor. Hill takes a deep breath. Xiaonan’s pace relentless, and it’s having an effect on Hill. Low kick lands for Xiaonan. Hill’s nose reddened a bit, and she’s breathing heavy, but she is pushing and throwing with power. Xiaonan moving well and throwing combinations. Hill doing her best to fire back, and her counters are having some success. Xiaonan with a kick to the body. She is certainly the fresher fighter. Hill leaps forward with a knee. Xiaonan grabs her and takes her to the floor, though Hill pops right back up. Xiaonan punching away until the bell. MMA Junkie gives the second to Xiaonan, 10-9.

Round 3 – Xiaonan out quickly and kicks the leg. Hill trying to find her way inside. Xiaonan relentless attacks making it tough to find a break in rhythm. Hill may have more power, but she can’t land enough to really make a difference right now. Xiaonan the busier fighter. She’s still moving well and throws a side kick to the head. Uppercut for Xiaonan. Side kick to the leg. Hill answers with a big overhand right. She’s having some success, but not enough right now. Hill able to briefly clinch, but Xiaonan slips away. Time winding down. Hill with another big Superman punch. SHe’s bleeding from the nose. One minute left. She moves into a clinch, but she can’t hold it. Xiaonan with a combination. Hill still with the single counters. Hill pushing until the bell, but Xiaonan right there to answer. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Xiaonan, and awards her the fight 29-28.

Round 1 – Lamas gets to the center, and Kattar moving right on the outside. Low kick for Lamas. High kick blocked. Kattar moving back and forth to open, but Lamas the one striking for now. Another high kick blocked. Lamas kicks the leg. Kattar still yet to really attack right now. Lamas dives at a leg but comes up short. Big right to the body for Kattar. Lamas misses a kick and thinks takedown again, but Kattar pushes him away. Stiff jab for Kattar, who is picking up some speed. He lands an uppercut. Lamas high kick blocked. Crowd cheering for Lamas, but it’s Kattar who is grabbing momentum. Kattar flicking out the jab and then lands a big right to the body. Big left followed by a right up top sends Lamas crashing to the floor. Kattar pounces with additional punches. Lamas trying to get up, but Kattar’s attack is relentless, and this fight is over.

Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Alexa Grasso

Round 1 – Grasso misses on an early low kick. Kowalkiewicz walking forward, but Grasso on the move. She lands a right hand over the top. Grasso aggressive early. Kowalkiewicz returning fire, but Grasso is getting the best of it to start. Grasso ripping off combinations. Speed definitely on her side. Kowalkiewicz not backing away from the strikes, and she’s throwing back when she can. Grasso high kick blocked. Kowalkiewicz continues to control the center, but Grasso is moving around and lighting things up. Spinning kick misses for Kowalkiewicz. She’s trying to get something going. Grasso slips under a spinning strike. Kowalkiewicz chops the legs a bit. She’s walking forward, but Grasso is staying busy. Right hand for Grasso. Another lands clean. Kowalkiewicz tough but having a hard time matching the output. Kowalkiewicz tries to clinch, but Grasso shoves her against the cage. They trade shots inside before moving back to the center. Fun round. MMA Junkie gives it to Grasso, 10-9.

Round 2 – Grasso starts with a kick to the legs and then the body. Kowalkiewicz is firing back, but it’s Grasso’s volume that’s being featured. It’s certainly a high pace, but she seems happy with it for now. Combinations for Grasso landing clean. Kowalkiewicz moving forward and trying to clinch, throwing out kicks, as well, but it’s just not working right now. Right hand for Grasso. Kowalkiewicz able to move inside and press the action to the cage. She wants to work inside, but Grasso is able to battle her way off the fence and get back to the center. Final minute. Grasso sticking and moving well. Kowalkiewicz refusing to back down, and she is keeping the pressure high, but Grasso landing clean punches. Both women flurry at the bell. MMA Junkie gives it to Grasso, 10-9.

Round 3 – Kowalkiewicz again out quickly and looking to attack. Grasso still lacing together combinations. Kowalkiewicz always moving forward. Grasso fires a few knees inside that miss. She lands up top with punches. Knees inside do score. Kowalkiewicz won’t back down, but she’s struggling to get any sustained offense. Kowalkiewicz clinches, but Grasso knees the body and pulls away. It’s just nonstop movement for Grasso, and Kowalkiewicz cant’ track her down. Grasso creating angles and delivering punches. It’s some of her best work, ever. Kowalkiewicz tough as they come, but she’s just being outworked tonight. Blood streaming from Kowalkiewicz’s nose in the final minute. She keeps moving forward. They tee off in the pocket in the final seconds. Kowalkiewicz thinks takedown, but Grasso grabs a guillotine and jumps guard. Kowalkiewicz stays on her feet, where they finish. MMA Junkie gives it to Grasso, 10-9, awarding her the fight 30-27.

Aljamain Sterling vs. Pedro Munhoz

Round 1 – Fast pace to open, with both men firing punches and kicks right at the start. They settle after a torrid open. Sterling with a slick spinning kick, but it’s blocked. He fires wide punches from range that land. Munhoz more compact in is movement forward. He’s attacking straight up the middle and having some success, as well. He lands with a kick to the body. Sterling incredible relaxed on the feet. His hands are low, and he’s showing great movement as he slips and attacks. Munhoz unfazed and moving right up the middle with straight punches. Left hooks lands over the top for Munhoz. Sterling slips away and lands a few clean punches of his own. Sterling changing levels and creating angles. It’s very fluid. High-level work from both men. Sterling’s counters are finding a home. Munhoz landing with bigger shots, but less frequently. Sterling’s head movement is fantastic. Munhoz having some trouble tracking him down. Sterling nearly ducks into a kick, but it glances off. They finish on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it to Sterling, 10-9.

Round 2 – Munhoz out quickly to engage. Sterling catches a quick but can’t get a takedown. Still, his hands are looking good right now. Munhoz is relentless in his attacks, moving forward and keeping the pressure high. Sterling changes levels and gets a takedown, but Munhoz is quickly back to his feet. Both men trading punches. Kicks to the body landing for both in this all-action contest. Munhoz holding the center, and he’s the man pressing, but Sterling is evading well and coming back with crisp counters. High kick from Munhoz, but Sterling answers with crisp punches that stun his foe. Munhoz a little wobbled, but he continues moving forward. Spinning elbow from Sterling. He’s looking fantastic. Munhoz isn’t backing down. He sweeps Sterling to the floor and immediately latches on to the neck, but Sterling flips and gets back to his feet. Sterling nearly kicks him while he’s still a downed opponent, but we reset on the feet. Munhoz with quite the chin, but Sterling is cracking him. They finish again on the feet. MMA Junkie gives it to Sterling, 10-9.

Round 3 – Munhoz still looking to engage. Sterling content to work on the outside. They trade low kicks. Munhoz pressing, trying to land the big shots. Sterling sticking and moving. His volume and creativity are on point. He’s rolling and turning and finding angles. Munhoz continues to press forward. He’s certainly not slowing or backing down. Munhoz is the one moving forward. He just can’t quite get the breakthrough he wants. Sterling content to box. He’s slipping strikes and finding counters. Munhoz with a spinning kick that’s blocked. He chops the legs a bit. Sterling punches his way off the cage. Final minute. Sterling wants a takedown, but it’s pushed away. They continue trading punches and kicks in the final seconds. Sterling talking a bit while they strike. Solid fight. Sterling takes the round on the MMA Junkie card, 10-9, and the fight 30-27.

Tatiana Suarez vs. Nina Ansaroff

Round 1 – Suarez with a few low kicks to open as she drifts to the right. She shoots in almost immediately. Ansaroff sprawls, but Suarez keeps the legs wrapped and is able to continue working until the fight is on the floor. Ansaroff active from the back and trying to tease a few submissions, but Suarez alertly pulls free from each attempt while keeping her top pressure heavy. Ansaroff creates some space and moves quickly to her knees, but Suarez grabs her neck and slows down that progress. Ansaroff adjusts and his able to pull free and get to her feet, but Suarez is relentless and again wraps the legs, dragging the action again to the canvas. Ansaroff again able to get guard, but she is forced to work on defense. One minute left, and Suarez looks to posture. Ansaroff tries to sneak in a few upkicks, but Suarez able to settle back down on top. Ansaroff to a seated position, but that’s it. MMA Junkie gives the first to Suarez, 10-9.

Round 2 – Ansaroff trying to stay active on her feet. Suarez again kicking at the legs as she slides to the right. Suarez drops down and shoots, getting inside on a takedown. Ansaroff backs to the fence. Suarez switching legs on the single. Ansaroff tries to grab the guillotine as she falls, but it’s not there. Ansaroff immediately scrambles to her knees and then back to the feet. Suarez stays tight to the body and then drags it quickly back down to the canvas. Suarez with the dominant wrestling. She’s not doing a ton of damage from the top, but she’s very clearly winning the fight. Ansaroff trying to be active from the bottom, but Suarez easily escaping the submission attempts. Ansaroff does get legs inside to create space, and she crawls to the feet, but Suarez refuses to back away. Knee inside, and Ansaroff grimaces in pain, complaining of a low blow. Crowd boos, and Ansaroff is annoyed. She takes a quick break, and we start again. Suarez looks content to strike with the little time remaining. She throws a few pushing side kicks. Round ends on the feet. MMA Junkie gives it to Suarez, 10-9.

Round 3 – Ansaroff hoping to get something going on the feet. She’s staying active and trying not to be a stationary target for a takedown. Suarez looks like she might want to strike a little with two rounds almost certainly in the bag. With two minutes gone, Suarez changes levels and shoots. Ansaroff able to fend it off this time. Suarez resets and shoots again. She gets Ansaroff to a knee, but she can’t get the fight to the floor. Ansaroff still moving well, but she’s running out of time. She needs to make something happen. Suarez shoots, but Ansaroff moves away well. The defense is working, but she needs offense. She lands a right hand. She kicks the body, as well. Suarez gaining confidence, but she’s losing time. Tai Tuivasa vs. Blagoy Ivanov

Round 1 – Tuivasa switching stances a bit as he stands in front of Ivanov and paws a few jabs. Low kick from Tuivasa, but Ivanov counters over the top with a right hand. Tuivasa pushes forward but misses with a leaping strike. Right hand lands for Tuivasa. He moves into the clinch and presses his opponent to the cage, but Ivanov tries to slow things down with overhooks. They grind away in the clinch. Tuivasa disengages and misses as spinning punch. He leaps forward again but eats a right hand and drops to the floor. He tries to crawl up. Ivanov wants the neck. It’s not there. Tuivasa seems to have recovered well and lands an elbow inside. Ivanov circles off the fence and again controls in the clinch. Tuivasa spins and backs away and fires off big punches that miss. One minute left. Tuivasa with a right hand, but Ivanov takes it well. Big punches from both men miss. Ivanov with a big right hook, and Tuivasa wobbles a bit. Tuivasa loading up on big shots, but Ivanov getting to the target quicker. Round ends on the feet. MMA Junkie gives it to Ivanov, 10-9.

Round 2 – Tuivasa again switching stances and looking for openings. He fakes a few strikes before kicking the leg. Right hand lands inside for Tuivasa. Short punch over the top, and Ivanov staggers a little. Tuivasa tries to rush forward and capitalize, but Ivanov ties things up in the clinch. Jab lands for Ivanov. Both men taking some deep breaths. Tuivasa using the jab a bit. Ivanov rushes forward with a few punches that land clean. Ivanov with a straight left. Tuivasa misses a huge right hand and then kicks the leg. Tuivasa works the leg again. He’s missing with big punches, but the leg kicks are having some effect. Straight punches land for both men. Slugfest in the center. Tuivasa with a slap. They clinch briefly, and Tuivasa drives it to the cage. Ivanov tries to attack the neck in the closing seconds. Bell sounds. Tuivasa taps after the bell, though it seems to be more in hopes of just getting Ivanov to let go. Crazy finish. MMA Junkie gives it to Tuivasa, 10-9.

Round 3 – Deep breaths by both men. Tuivasa lands a left hook. He kicks the leg again. Jab lands for Tuivasa. Right hand lands, but Ivanov not going anywhere. Into the clinch. Tuivasa controlling from the outside. Ivanov again grabs the neck and snaps the action to the floor. Tuivasa wisely spins and scrambles to his feet, his back is still against the cage. Tuivasa briefly circles off as they battle for underhooks, but Ivanov turns him quickly again. Ivanov with short punches inside. Tuivasa briefly breaks and unleashes a flurry of big shots but can’t land clean. Ivanov again reaches up and controls the neck. He drives a few knees inside. Less than two minutes. Tuivasa with a short right hand and he moves back to the middle. Low kick for Tuivasa. They’re trading big punches. Both men landing with big shots. Tuivasa continues to work on the leg. Less than a minute. Both men are exhausted. Big punches from both in the final seconds. Close round. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Ivanov, 10-9, and awards the fight to him, as well, 29-28.
