UFC 240 play-by-play and live results

EDMONTON – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 240 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 7 p.m. ET (4 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

In the main event, featherweight champion Max Holloway (20-4 MMA, 16-4 UFC) puts his title on the line against former lightweight champ Frankie Edgar (23-6-1 MMA, 17-6-1 UFC). In the co-feature, former women’s featherweight titleholder Cris Cyborg (20-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC) returns against the unbeaten Felicia Spencer (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC).

Results

Erik Koch vs. Kyle Stewart

Round 1 – Stewart on the outside moving left. He kicks the legs a bit to start, but Koch looks sharp when he answers back. Punches and kicks early from both men in a nice start to the action. Koch lands a clean right as he’s moving forward and pushes into the clinch. They’re battling in the clinch, with Koch holding a firm bodylock. Stewart battles well to spin off the fence, but Koch gets underhooks and is able to switch it again. Still, it’s a stalemate, and Koch backs away. They trade strikes in the center, and Stewart surprises by shooting inside, but Koch easily stuffs it and controls from the outside in the clinch. Still nothing there, so Koch breaks away, landing a right hand as he exits. Stewart lands a clean right hand as they restart. He rushes forward with strikes, but Koch able to slip them. Stewart shoots again. Koch defends and lands a nice knee to the body. Round ends in the clinch. MMA Junkie gives the first to Koch, 10-9.

Round 2 – Stewart attacks the leg again to start. He’s ver active to start, pressing forward, and he lands a big right hand. Stewart right back in the clinch. Koch defends and tries to sneak in a guillotine, but Stewart is able to pop his head free. Koch on the outside now, and he wraps the body and is able to drag the action to the floor. Stewart won’t stay there, though, and he gets right back to his feet. Koch stays with the bodylock and gets a quick trip, but Stewart again right back up. Koch continues the strategy, and he gets the fight to the floor again. This time he’s able to stay there, taking side control. Stewart able to work to a seated position, looking to escape, but Koch adjusts and maintains control. Koch briefly threatens with a D’Arce, but it’s not there. Koch lets go and rattles off a few punches. Stewart battles up to his feet, but Koch is the one controlling from the outside. Round ends there, and MMA Junkie gives it to Koch, 10-9.

Round 3 – It’s been a grind, but both men come out looking to strike in the final round. Koch trying to push forward with strikes, but Stewart catches him with a knee. Koch still moving forward and gets right back to the clinch. Clear Koch wants the fight here. He changes levels once again and drags the action to the canvas. Stewart gets to a seated position quickly and then crawls to his feet. Both men clearly tired but trying to get something going on. Stewart with a surprise shot on the restart, but Koch able to defend and control, and he reverses course, scoring a takedown of his own. Stewart on his back, working from half-guard. Koch tries to set up an arm-triangle, but the cage is going to make that tough. Koch steps over to mount. Can’t keep it there. He looks again for the arm-triangle. Not there. Koch strikes, instead, landing a few big shots. Koch wants the back but can’t quite get there before the bell. MMA Junkie gives it to Koch, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27.

Gillian Robertson vs. Sarah Frota

Round 1 – Frota with a low stance to start. Robertson fires a front kick to the face that just misses. She’s active with strikes early. Robertson moves forward and wraps the body, quickly tripping the action to the canvas. Frota able to move to guard quickly. She’s holding tight from the bottom. Robertson patient from the top and looking to advance position, but Frota holding tight. Robertson able to sneak the right leg through the guard, but Frota scrambles immediately and looks to attack the leg. It’s not quite there, so Frota has to look for another opportunity. She spins and tries to set up an inverted triangle. She gets the legs in place, but Robertson looks comfortable. She works patiently free. Frota tries again for the submission, but Robertson again able to pop free and reset in side control. Defensive moments there from Robertson, but she’s free now. Short strike slices Frota open over her left eye. Robertson trying to isolate the left arm, but Frota keeps it tucked. Robertson finishes the round on top, and MMA Junkie gives her the round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Frota bleeding to start the round. She comes out looking to strike. Robertson comes out moving laterally on the outside, but she’s able to change levels and drag the fight to the floor again. Frota again active from her back, and her guard is active. Still, Robertson able to settle on top. Rubber guard for Frota, but Robertson able to slide out to a very high half-guard. Frota tries to set up the arm-triangle from the bottom, but Robertson looks fine in the hold and waits it out, defending well and forcing her opponent to let go. In the ensuing scramble, Robertson is able to move to mount. Frota not panicking, but Robertson continues to work from the top position. Punches and elbows rain down. Frota trying to roll and escape, but Robertson decides to go for it and just unleashes a vicious barrage of elbows that brings a halt to the contest.

Alexandre Pantoja vs. Deiveson Figueiredo

Round 1 – Figueiredo with his hands low and outstretched to start. He’s holding the center and holding his left arm out. Pantoja trying to dart inside but can’t get there. He moves forward again, and Figueiredo slips under and drives the action to the canvas. Pantoja working the guard from underneath. He looks at a few options, but nothing there. Figueiredo escapes but decides to back away, just escaping an upkick. Back on the feet, Figueiredo throwing hard and lands a right hand. Pantoja answers right back with punches of his own, but it’s clear Figueiredo is throwing the harder punches. Pantoja walking forward to strike, but Figueiredo counters with another big right. Figueiredo so calm as he strikes. Pantoja dives forward and slips to the back on a takedown, but Figueiredo able to get right back to his feet. Pantoja stays on the back, but Figueiredo able to slip away, and we reset with a minute left. Figueiredo again slips a punch and lands a big right. Pantoja’s face is busted up. Leaping knee from Figueiredo, but Pantoja lands a big right. Fun round, and MMA Junkie gives it to Figueiredo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Pantoja with a nice kick to the body to start. He kicks to the legs, as well. He drives forward for a takedown, but Figueiredo stuffs it. Figueiredo switching stances a bit. He throws a low kick, but Pantoja pushes him down with a big punch over the top. Figueiredo right back to his feet, though. Pantoja starting to find his range on the feet, and he’s having some success. Figueiredo unfazed, though. Pantoja kicks the leg. They trade punches. Pantoja looks to wrap the body, but it’s not there, so they keep swinging. Traded shots in the pocket. Figueiredo really slowing his output as the round plays out. Pantoja dives forward and lands a beautiful outside trip. Figueiredo alertly gets back to his feet with real speed. Figueiredo with a big right hand over the top. Still, it’s Pantoja holding the center. In the final 30 seconds, business picks up. Crazy swinging. Figueiredo lands a big right hand that floors Pantoja. Figueiredo rushing to try and finish, but the bell sounds. Crazy finish, and Figueiredo steals it on the late work, 10-9 on the MMA Junkie card.

Round 3 – Pantoja out quickly and wants a takedown, but Figueiredo counters well, avoiding the rush and striking while looking to avoid the clinch. He pulls away, and Figueiredo now with his hands low. Pantoja walks forward, and Figueiredo lands a huge uppercut. Elbow follows. Big shots from Figueiredo, and Pantoja is hurt. Strikes send him to the floor. Pantoja all heart and tries to grab the leg, so Figueiredo turns and walks away after pulling free. Pantoja’s face is covered in blood, streaming down from a few cuts. He kicks the leg, and Figueiredo smiles. Pantoja pushes forward, but Figueiredo able to slip under and score a takedown, moving to mount. Pantoja quickly works to guard and then back to the feet. Pantoja not backing down, but Figueiredo has landed a few elbows up the middle. Just vicious. Pantoja shoot again. Figueiredo defends, turning and running to reset. Pantoja runs after him. Relentless aggression. Into the final minute, and Pantoja is doing everything he can to win this fight. He’s striking until the end, and it’s a great finish. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Figueiredo, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27. Phenomenal fight.

Gavin Tucker vs. Seungwoo Choi

Round 1 – Choi takes the center to start, and Tucker stays outside of the range of his longer opponent. Tucker looking to dart in and out, but Choi there to keep his volume high and try and use his length. Tucker leaps forward and changes levels, taking the action to the canvas. Choi tries to kicks his legs high then scramble to escape. Tucker slips around to the back, but he can’t get his hooks in place as Choi stands. Choi turns to face his opponent, but Tucker counters perfectly and drags the action to the canvas once again. Choi to his feet, but Tucker sweeps a leg out once again. Choi battling to stay upright, but Tucker keeps pulling his leg out, bringing him back to a kneeling position. Choi finally gets both legs under him. Tucker pulls the action down again. Choi is just constantly on defense. He finally pulls free with a minute left and looks to reset and strike. Tucker moving well and won’t give him a stationary target. They end on the feet, and MMA Junkie gives it to Tucker, 10-9.

Round 2 – Fast pace to start the second. Choi looks fresh and ready to strike. Tucker wastes little time getting inside and pushing the action down. Choi again shows good defense, but it’s only enough to get him back to his feet. Tucker keeps pressing forward in the clinch. Choi finally slips free, but it’s Tucker who lands a nice left hand. Choi misses a spinning strike, and Tucker slips under it and drags him to the canvas. Choi working from his knees. Tucker controlling and lands a big knee to the head of a kneeling opponent. Referee Marc Goddard steps in and deducts a point. Choi comes out looking to strike on the restart. Big shots to the body for both me. Quick start. Tucker slips on a high kick but gets right back to his feet. Choi trying to press, but Tucker is managing the distance well on the outside. Tucker back to the clinch, but nothing really there. Round ends, and MMA Junkie calls it 9-9 with the deduction.

Round 3 – Choi comes out looking to strike and kicks the body a bit. Tucker swings back but quickly moves into the clinch. Choi again forced to defend the takedown. He’s up to it, and they move back to the center. Choi landing solid punches on the feet, and Tucker right back to the takedowns. He’s driving in from the outside and gets Choi to a knee. Choi back to his feet and he counters with a takedown of is own. Choi deals with it well, climbing to his feet and quickly getting his own takedown. Tucker on the back and gets the arm under the neck. Choi in trouble, and he has to tap.

Hakeem Dawodu vs. Yoshinori Horie

Round 1 – Horie moving in and out on the outside and leaps forward wildly with punches that miss. Dawodu with a traditional stance, and he lands a nice kick to the lead leg. Horie’s hands down, and he continues to bounce and move on the outside. He kicks the leg, as well. Dawodu doing his best to press forward, cutting off the cage and trying to slow the rapid movement of his opponent. Horie with a big right hand over the top. Dawodu off-balance and falls back but pops immediately to his feet. Horie with another right over the top. His wild movement paying dividends, attacking off-rhythm. Dawodu walking forward, but he’s just following. He moves forward, and Horie shoves him to the floor. Dawodu right back to his feet. Horie walks over a kick and lands a takedown, but Horie pops up and nails him with a right on the exit. Dawodu having trouble dealing with Horie. MMA Junkie gives Horie the round, 10-9.

Round 2 – Horie again out quickly, darting in and out of range. He’s making Dawodu chase him. Dawodu struggling to get the timing. Horie light on his feet, switching stances and staying out of range. Horie with a right hand, but Dawodu able to clinch him and land a few knees inside. Horie pulls away. Dawodu tries to grab him again and lands a few more knees. Horie still elusive this round, but he’s not firing off as many strikes this frame. Dawodu high kick blocked. Horie throws a right but eats a strong counter. Horie thinks takedown, but Dawodu delivers a knee and pushes him away. Dawodu gets into the clinch and knees. Horie backs away. He’s starting to slow a little. Round ends on the feet. MMA Junkie gives it to Dawodu, 10-9.

Round 3 – No doubt how the fighters will move. It’s Horie on the outside and looking to keep his movement constant. Dawodu stalking. Horie misses on a big right and gets kneed to the body for his mistake. Dawodu able to land a punch up top and then has a high kick blocked. Dawodu gets into the clinch and lands a big knee to the body. Horie is hurt. Dawodu swarming. Horie misses with a big right hand. Dawodu with punches against the cage. Horie showing some heart, but Dawodu is in complete control. Big elbow up top. Horie back to the center, but Dawodu not letting him off the hook. Dawodu in tight. Knees and elbows landing clean. Dawodu pounding away. High kick lands clean. Horie goes to the floor. He only falls to a seated position, but referee Kyle Cardinal has very fairly seen enough, and this is over.

Alexis Davis vs. Viviane Araujo

Round 1 – Araujo leaps forward with a jab that lands. She’s light on her feet and moving well. Davis lands a right hand in tight. Araujo stumbles to the floor but pops back to her feet. Davis is leaping in and out of range with incredible quickness. Davis countering well, though. Davis’s face already reddened. Araujo with a crisp one-two. She’s unloading with the right hand. She catches a Davis kick and trips her to the floor. Araujo prefers to kick the legs rather than follow to the floor. Referee Yves Lavigne steps in and brings it to the feet. Araujo with a clear speed advantage. Davis stalking though and not backing down. Superman punch from Araujo lands clean. She is very loose and confident on the feet. Araujo landing crisp punches nearly at will. Davis not backing down though. She’s refusing to be intimidated despite her opponent’s work. MMA Junkie gives the first to Araujo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Araujo again light on her feet. Davis trying to work in her own punches, but the speed is just making that difficult. Davis tries to clinch, but Araujo able to pull free. Quick uppercut from Araujo. Left hand lands. She takes a few deep breaths. The constant movement is taking some energy from Araujo, but she’s executing well. Araujo jumps forward and lands a trip takedown. Davis attacks the leg. It’s not there, but she uses Araujo’s escape as an opportunity to sweep to the top. Araujo working guard. Davis on top and landing some punches and elbows. Davis’ nose bleeding, but she’s in control with two minutes left. Araujo trying to hold tight underneath. She’s in closed guard and seems content to stay here right now. Still, Davis finding opportunities to posture and strike. Punches and elbows landing from the top. Araujo looking for potential options late in the round, but Davis pushes them aside and continues to strike. Mistake from Araujo to take this fight down. MMA Junkie gives Davis the round, 10-9.

Round 3 – Araujo back to her quick punches, but Davis countering with kicks to the body. Araujo’s jab so quick, and she’s able to move away before she’s tagged in reply. Davis walking forward, but she’s taking damage early. Davis shoots the double but can’t get her hands clasped, and Araujo is able to stay upright. Araujo has lost some speed, but she’s still the faster fighter. Davis’s face is a mess, and blood is streaming from her nose. Araujo trying to keep her energy high. She’s fading halfway through the round, but she’s fighting smart, sticking and moving. Davis shoots and then tries to pull guard, but Araujo able to pull free from the grasp and get back to the feet. She kicks the legs a bit, but Lavigne again brings her to the feet. Davis’ left eye closing quickly. Araujo keeps working on it, throwing the right hand and then moving. Davis is as tough as they come. She gets into the clinch and knees inside. Araujo stuck on the fence, but the bell sounds. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Araujo, 10-9, awarding her the fight 29-28.

Marc-Andre Barriault vs. Krzysztof Jotko

Round 1 – Kicks traded from both men to start. Jotko fires punches over the top to counter. He kicks to the body, as well. Barriault moving forward, but Jotko changes levels and drives him to the cage. Barriault defending well against the fence, but it’s a grind in the clinch. Barriault gets off the fence and drives a knee inside and presses Jotko to the cage. Jotko switches again. Battle in the clinch. Jotko finally backs away to the center. Barriault again looking to be the aggressor. Jotko countering well. Barriault walking forward, but Jotko retreating well and offering nice counters. A reverse elbow lands clean for Jotko. Barriault with a right hand. He’s now pressing in from the outside. Clinch been a little bit of a stalemate. Jotko circles out in the final minute. He looks at the legs and is able to lift Barriault to the floor, but he can’t keep him there. Barriault with a big slam of his own, but he also can’t hold it. They finish on the feet. MMA Junkie leans Jotko, 10-9.

Round 2 – Barriault again the one in the center and walking forward. However, Jotko is often the first one to throw, or at least the most proficient. Uppercuts traded inside. Back to the center, and Jotko misses an elbow but lands a straight left. The take turns with low kicks. Jotko just has more volume. Barriault presses the action to the fence. Still, Jotko turns off looks to pick strikes. He thinks takedown, but Barriault stuffs it again. Crowd getting a little restless as they work from the clinch. Jotko wants a takedown, but Barriault able to stay upright and pounds the body a bit. Jotko back to the center. They both flick out some creative shots that miss, then Jotko digs to the body. Back to the clinch, and Jotko again wants the takedown, but it’s not there. Crowd not feeling this fight at all in the final minute. They break apart with a few seconds left. Jotko just misses on a kick. Barriault with the takedown at the bell, but it’s Jotko who lands on top. MMA Junkie gives it to Jotko, 10-9.

Round 2 – Jotko wants a takedown again to open, but it’s just not there. Barriault staying upright, but he’s not offering much in reply. Meanwhile, Jotko not really doing much either. Referee Herb Dean begging for action. Jotko finally moves back to the center. Barriault wants to brawl, but Jotko counters and moves. Barriault not able to really do much when he’s free. Jotko shoots again, but nothing there. He lands an uppercut and backs away. He presses in again, and Barriault lands a short elbow inside. Barriault is doing his best to move forward and strike. Jotko is bleeding a little. Barriault seems the more powerful man, but he’s just not throwing enough. Jotko fading in the final minute. Barriault trying to press. Jotko with a trip takedown in the final seconds, but no time to do anything with it. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Barriault, 10-9, but gives the fight to Jotko, 29-28.
