UFC 245 play-by-play and live results

LAS VEGAS – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC 245 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results beginning at 6:15 p.m. ET (3:15 p.m. PT).

The event takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2 and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

In the main event, welterweight champion Kamaru Usman (15-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC) puts his belt on the line in a grudge match against former interim champ Colby Covington (15-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC). In the co-main event, featherweight champ Max Holloway (21-4 MMA, 17-4 UFC) defends his title against Alexander Volkanovski (20-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC). And the third title fight on the card sees dual women’s champ Amanda Nunes (18-4 MMA, 11-1 UFC) put her bantamweight title up against former featherweight titleholder Germaine de Randamie (9-3 MMA, 6-1 UFC).

Current fight

Geoff Neal vs. Mike Perry

Round 1 – Perry with a low kick to start. He’s got the center to start. Neal moving well on the outside. He rushes forward with a kick to the body. Neal low kick looked like it may have hot the groin, but we fight on. Perry staling from the center, nut Neal tags him with a high kick. He’s hurt. Neal sees it and starts unleashing punches. Perry staggers to the ground. The punches continue, and referee Chris Tognoni has to stop it. Another impressive win for Neal.

Results

Oskar Piechota vs. Punahele Soriano

Round 1 – Soriano in the center and has a high kick blocked. Piechota shifts left on the outside against his southpaw opponent. Soriano tees up a few big lefts but misses the mark to start. Piechota tries to engage, but Soriano lands with a left that stuns him. Another left sends Piechota to the floor. Soriano leaps forward and rushes with punches. Piechota doing his best to turn and recover. He’s taking some big shots, but he spins to his knees. Soriano tries to take the back. Piechota recovers and spins free. Crafty work. Piechota attacks the right arm. It’s not there, but he uses it to spin to a better position. They stand, and Piechota grabs the neck. Soriano pops his head free. They reset. Torrid pace has taken a little from both men already. Soriano the one walking forward as they start again. He fires the big left, and it lands. Piechota again in trouble. Left hook to the chin, and he’s out. A right lands as he falls, too. Vicious.

Viviane Araujo vs. Jessica Eye

Round 1 – Araujo bounces lightly on her lead leg. Eye a little more flat-footed. She flurries but eats a counter that catches her attention. Araujo’s speed is clear early. Eye seems to have a little more pop early, but she’s going to have to track her opponent down. Eye with a nice right to the body. She flashes out a front kick to the body. Jab scores. Eye stationary but timing things well right now. Punches traded in the pocket. Araujo catches a high kick and is able to push the action to the canvas just past the halfway mark. Half-guard for Eye. She’s trying to hold tight on the upper body. Araujo postures and punches. She backs away and controls from the front, but Eye scrambles up to her feet. She eats a punch as she rises, but she’s clear. Eye flashes a high ick that’s blocked. She shoots inside but comes up short. Low kicks traded. MMA Junkie leans toward Araujo, 10-9.

Round 2 – Araujo reaches with an uppercut but is tagged with a flurry in reply. Eye not willing to concede anything right now. Araujo holding the center, and she remains the more mobile fighter, but Eye is digging in on the exchanges. Right hand for Eye. Low kick scores. Superman for Araujo scores, but Eye doesn’t budge. Araujo catches another high kick, but this time Eye bounces off the cage and stays upright. Eye with a nice chop of the legs. Left hand lands. She’s fighting on the outside, but she’s having some success. Araujo picks up the pressure with two minutes left and is able to push inside and score the double-leg, taking the fight to the floor. Eye doesn’t stay there, though, framing and creating space and then rushing to her feet. On the restart, it’s Eye in the center, and now she’s the one pushing forward. Punches and low kicks traded. Eye slips under a strike and wraps the body, looking for the takedown. Not there before the bell. MMA Junkie gives it to Eye, 10-9.

Round 3 – Fight likely hangs in the balance. Araujo looks fresh enough. She’s moving well and in the center. Eye thinks takedown, but Araujo pushes her away. Araujo switching stances and teasing with the jab, but Eye is sitting on her punches when she swings back. Eye presser her way to the center and is setting the tone, landing punches now and looking to slip the reply. Eye punches to the body. Araujo shoots inside, but Eye defends it perfectly, digging her arms under and pushing her away. Araujo land a clean hook on the restart. She shoots again, but Eye pushes it away. Araujo complains of an eye poke, but referee Marc Goddard says to fight on. Araujo takes a deep breath. Eye pressing and lands a right hand. Little more than a minute left. Eye smiles a bit. She jabs the body. Araujo retreating and moving well but not staying busy with her hands. Eye the aggressor in the final minute. Her left eye is a little banged up. She swings with a big right. Araujo wants a takedown, but it’s not there. Eye knees the body. Both women raise their hands at the end. MMA Junkie gives a close on to Eye, 10-9, awarding her the fight 29-28.

Kai Kara-France vs. Brandon Moreno

Round 1 – Kara-France with a low kick to open, and both men keeping their hands high to start. Moreno waving his opponent in a little as he flurries with punches. Kara-France just misses a huge right over the top. Quick pace from both to start. Jabs exchanged. Kara-France with a right hand over the top, but Moreno swings back. Both men staying busy. Big shots traded, but Moreno taunts his opponent, asking for more. They continue to trade. Kara-France lands a right that staggers Moreno briefly, but he pops back up. Moreno showing some damage under the left eye. He’s still engaging. Kara-France with another big right. He’s dialed in, for sure, but MorenoX is not backing away. Acrobatic kick misses from Kara-France. One minute left. Moreno pressing. He lands a high kick over the top. Kara-France still holding he center. He rushes forward with an elbow. Strikes again exchanged at the end of a fun first round. MMA Junkie leans toward Kara-France, 10-9.

Round 2 – Moreno still leading with the jab to start. Kara-France moving well and creating angles. Kara-France’s low kicks have reddened Moreno’s left calf. Still, Moreno holding the center and willing to engage at every opportunity. Kara-France shifting outside again the cage. Moreno cutting off his escape routes and firing heavy punches. Kara-France stumbles a bit as he moves laterally but is able to get back to the center. Moreno’s aggression paying dividends right now. Left hand scores. High kick blocked but certainly catches his opponent’s attention. Moreno has his rhythm right now, and he’s not allowing Kara-France much of a chance to even react. Kara-France now bleeding from the nose. Moreno’s attack relentless. He’s the one setting the tone right now. Kara-France does land with a big shot in the closing seconds, but MMA Junkie gives it to Moreno, 10-9.

Round 3 – Kara-France slips on early high kick but recovers quickly and rushes with punches. Moreno right there to return fire. Both men still quick and full of energy to open the final round. High kicks traded. Pace is blistering with punches traded. Moreno holding the center and generally the one striking first. Kara-France pushes forward and shoulder checks Moreno to the floor, but Moreno pops right back to his feet. Kara-France lands a straight, and he follows with a few more. Moreno handles them well. He holds his hands up and asks for more, then throws punches down the middle. Moreno yells out loud. He wants a war. Two minutes left. Moreno continues to land the jab and then brings the right behind it. Kara-France has blood streaming from his nose. Moreno lands the big right. Moreno with the left inside. Moreno is swinging and having some success, but Moreno is just relentless. The pace and volume is staggering. Kara-France with a big left over the top. He’s not going away. But Moreno answers with a flurry. It’s incredible work from both men, and it lasts until the bell. “Fight of the Night” contender for sure. MMA Junkie gives the final round to Moreno, 10-9, and awards him the fight 29-28.

Chase Hooper vs. Daniel Teymur

Round 1 – Hooper with a low kick but ears a big right over thee top. X follows to the floor and locks in a guillotine that looks tight, but Hooper twists and turns and actually kicks off the cage to finally get his head free. That was nearly a disaster. Hooper drops to guard and grabs the arm, but Teymur desperately works it free and gets back to the feet. Hooper forced to follow. He gets up and eats a huge right hand. Hooper looks hurt, but when Teymur follows to the floor, he finds himself tied up in Hooper’s grasp. They scoot back to the feet, and Hooper trying to get the back. Teymur has his right side against the cage, hoping to prevent that. They battle for position in close quarters. Hooper kicks off the cage to push them away from it. It gets Teymur off-balance and on the canvas. Hooper methodically works the left arm under the next. He’s a little off to the side, but he squeezes anyway. Teymur tough as nails and refuses to tap. Hooper has to let it go. He moves to mount and starts punching away. That makes Teymur move again. Less than a minute. Choke isn’t there, so Hooper moves to a mounted triangle and starts pounding away with punches and elbows. Teymur is absolutely trapped on his back. Strikes are non-stop, and this fight is over. Teymur rises to reveal a nasty cut. Fun fight.

Matt Brown vs. Ben Saunders

Round 1 – Both men looking loose to open, hands about chest level. Brown in the center, but Saunders moving on the outside. Punches traded, but Saunders clinches and pulls guard. Immediately he locks in a triangle and looks for the finish. Brown’s left arm trapped in the hold, and he’s trying to use it to keep space. Saunders lands a few elbows from his back. He lets the triangle go before cinching it in at a different angle. Brown is trapped in the hold, but he’s remaining calm and pressing down enough to keep safe. Saunders trying to arch his back. Crowd actually getting a little restless, with the two men stuck in this position, but Saunders obviously doesn’t want to let go of the submission attempt. Brown able to posture, and Saunders finally lets go. Less than a minute. Saunders working rubber guard from underneath. Brown gets free at the very end and tries to punch, but the bell sounds. MMA Junkie gives it to Saunders, 10-9.

Round 2 – Saunders looking to strike from range. Brown going to want to try and avoid the clinch. He lands a left hand Saunders kicks to the body. Brown catches it and pushes him to the cage. Short punch lands, but Saunders pulls away. High kick from Brown. Partially lands. Brown pushes forward with more punches. Saunders grabs hold and falls to the canvas, immediately securing rubber guard on his right side. Crowd doesn’t like it. Brown looking to advance on the open side, and he lands a few punches inside. Saunders briefly closes to full guard before again bringing the right leg up high. It’s not the brawl folks were wanting, and the crowd is buzzing a bit with a minute left. Saunders not able to get much going. Brown truing to work, but they’re finally brought to the feet. Brown lands a clean punch on the restart. Saunders is stunned. He thinks takedown, but Brown throws him to the canvas. Brown decides to follow down, moving into the guard and landing a few big punches. More come, and Saunders is out. Vicious ground-and-pound to end it.

Omari Akhmedov vs. Ian Heinisch

Round 1 – Heinisch rushes out and throws a kick that’s blocked. Low kicks traded. Heinisch very frantic in his movement to open. He leaps forward with a right that lands. Heinisch checks a low kick. Akhmedov now pressing, and he rifles off a few big hooks that just miss. Heinisch slips away from the cage and back to the center. Heinisch looking to stay mobile and create angles, but Akhmedov standing right in front of him and looking menacing with his punches. Heinisch’s movement has slowed a bit. He’s still shaking his hands as he moves, though. Akhmedov misses on a spinning backfist. Two minutes left. Akhmedov with a right hand over the top. Heinisch kicks to the body. Akhmedov shoots on a takedown. Hands clasped behind the legs. Head high, and he lifts Heinisch and slams him to the canvas. Heinisch turns to his side and then stands. He rolls forward with Akhmedov holding from the back. It gets Heinisch free, and he resets on the feet. Heinisch kicks low and takes a punch over the top. MMA Junkie gives the round to Akhmedov, 10-9.

Round 2 – Heinisch looking to get things working on the feet. Akhmedov keeping his hands high and looking to counter. Heinisch sticking with the leg kicks, but Akhmedov answering with punches over the top. Akhmedov utilizing low kicks, as well, and he’s starting to mark up his opponent’s legs. Heinisch pressing with punches, but every time he throws, Akhmedov digs in and answers right back. Akhmedov continues pressing forward, and he wants the takedown. Heinisch looking to defend against the cage. Akhmedov relentless with the pressure, but Heinisch able to slip away. Heinisch is the quicker man, the more athletic fighter, but Akhmedov is just not presenting much in terms of opportunity. Meanwhile, he’s finding moments to slip in the left hand. Heinisch scores with a knee up the middle. Now he wants the takedown. Akhmedov defending against the cage. Heinisch going from single to double. He finally gets Akhmedov to a seated position with seconds left. Close round. MMA Junkie leans toward Heinisch, 10-9.

Round 3 – Heinisch may be behind two rounds. He’s in the center and looking to strike. Akhmedov happy to exchange in the pocket. Neither man really dominating in the exchanges. Akhmedov isn’t flashy, but he is effective. Heinisch trying to pressure with punches. He kicks to the body, as well. He shoots on a takedown and is able to get Akhmedov off-balance and to the canvas. Akhmedov pops right back up, but Heinisch stays in control with the body lock. Akhmedov able to spin off the cage and land a few knees. Heinisch pulls away to reset. Heinisch takes a deep breath. Akhmedov looks up at the clock. Both men are tired. Heinisch pressing forward and lands a late takedown. Akhmedov turns to his knees, and Heinisch jumps on the back. Akhmedov undeterred and crawls back to his feet. He tries for a takedown of his own. Heinisch thrown off-balance but climbs back up. They trade punches on the feet until the end. Heinisch jumps in on a knee. Akhmedov catches him and throws him down at the bell. MMA Junkie gives the round to Heinisch, 10-9, and awards him the fight 29-28. Going to be close.

Vieira not as quick, but she’s sitting down on her punches when she lets them go. Aldana trying to get her rhythm going, but Vieira’s counters are very effective. Vieira with a crisp left hand. Aldana looking to get in and out of range, but Vieira is really punishing her with combinations. Vieira with a left to the body and another leg kick. Aldana upping the power late, but Vieira content to answer back. it’s working, until it doesn’t. Aldana lands clean with a left, and Vieira hits the deck. Pinpoint follow-ups on the floor are one the money, and Vieira is out.
