UFC on ESPN+ 25 play-by-play and live results

RIO RANCHO, N.M. – MMA Junkie is on scene and reporting live from Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 25 event, and you can join us for live play-by-play and official results.

The event takes place at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., near Albuquerque. The card streams on ESPN+.

In the main event, former light heavyweight contenders Corey Anderson (13-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) and Jan Blachowicz (25-8 MMA, 8-5 UFC) meet in a rematch. In the co-feature, Michel Pereira (23-10 MMA, 1-1 UFC) takes on Diego Sanchez (29-12 MMA, 18-12 UFC) at welterweight.

Current Fight

Mara Romero Borella vs. Montana De La Rosa

Round 1 – Borella opens up with successful overhand right. De La Rosa catches a kick, which is caught by Borella. As a result, Borella dumps De La Rosa to the mat. However, De La Rosa quickly gets up. De La Rosa and Borella scramble to get an advantageous position on the ground. The two fighters are tangled on the mat. Eventually, Borella pulls through and gets a hook in on the back of De La Rosa. There’s blood on the mat – it’s from Borella. De La Rosa reverses position and now she’s on the back of Borella. Moments later, De La Rosa drags Borella down. Borella gets to her feet, but De La Rosa hops on the back and gets both hooks in. Eventually, De La Rosa loses one of her hooks. Borella is elbowing the thigh of De La Rosa. The horn sounds and the round ends. Neither fighter did much with the advantageous positions that had in the round, but 10-9 De La Rosa.

Round 2 – De La Rosa charges at Borella and eats a stiff punch for her troubles. Borella gets aggressive and De La Rosa responds by dragging her to the canvas. Slowly but surely, De La Rosa works her way to controlling the back. One hook is in – and now the second one is, too. De La Rosa punches Borella’s body. Borella sits up, but is yanked back down by De La Rosa. There’s a lot of hand-fighting going on right now, but De La Rosa hasn’t been able to get a significant grip of any sort. Borella eventually spins out and De La Rosa lands in side control. Borella flips over again and De La Rosa has her back again – this time from a half back mount. De La Rosa lands a few ground-and-pound shots as the horn sounds. 20-18 De La Rosa

Mark De La Rosa vs. Raulian Paiva

Round 1 – A touch of gloves and UFC on ESPN+ 25 commences. De La Rosa taps Paiva’s outside leg with a kick. The fighters exchange, before landing simultaneous leg kicks. Paiva misses on a leg kick, and then an uppercut. De La Rosa grabs hold of Paiva, but the Brazilian reverses. Paiva is pressing De La Rosa up against the fence. Paiva landing short knees to the thigh. De La Rosa separates and lands a hard right hand. Back in the center of the cage, Paiva lands a hard leg kick. Paiva gets aggressive and lands a combination on De La Rosa. The fight moves back to the fence, with Paiva once again pushing De La Rosa. The fight returns to the center. Paiva lands a one-two. Paiva lands on an uppercut, but De La Rosa answers. The two exchange again and Paiva connects with a hard short punch. The round ends. It was close, but 10-9 Paiva.

Round 2 – Paiva stalking De La Rosa again. Both fighters connect with punches before Paiva grabs hold of De La Rosa. Working De La Rosa up against the fence, Paiva resorts back to kneeing his opponent’s thigh. Paiva has double under-hooks in the clinch, but De La Rosa wiggles out. De La Rosa connects on a body shot, but Paiva lands a jab. Paiva lands a right hand and a follow-up leg kick. Paiva whiffs on a hard punch. De La Rosa lands a body kick. Blood is coming out of the nose of De La Rosa, but he doesn’t look bothered. Paiva lands a combination. Paiva still pressuring De La Rosa. A massive right hand lands for Paiva and De La Rosa is floored. Diving in, Paiva finishes the job with a big follow-up punch. That’s it. Paiva picks up his first UFC victory by knockout.

Macy Chiasson vs. Shanna Young

Round 1 – Both fighters come out guns-a-blazing. Young chucking high kicks. Chiasson resorting to her clinch game and boxing. A high kick appears to stun Chiasson, who grabs hold of Young. Chiasson lands a series of punches. They separate, but Chiasson tries to drag the fight to the ground – no dice. Chiasson grabbing the plum clinch at will. Chiasson tries another takedown. They hit the mat in a neutral position and get back to the feet. Grabbing the clinch again, Chiasson lands a series of big knees to the body of Young. Eventually, Young answers with a short standing elbow. Young is stuck in the clinch and she needs to get out. Knee after knee lands for Chiasson. Both fighters seem exhausted already. Chiasson trips Young to the mat and gets  side control from the back. Chiasson landing ground-and-pound, but the punches don’t have a ton of zip on them. The horn sounds. What a round. 10-9 Chiasson.

Round 2 – Swollen, Young is wearing the damage from Round 1. Chiasson comes out aggressive. Young bites down on her mouth piece and chucks knuckles at Chiasson. Young tries a takedown, but Chiasson threatens a choke. Young reverses and ends up on top of Chiasson, who eventually gets to her feet. Chiasson gets Young down and ends up back in side control from the back. Young rolls and Chiasson is in half guard. One of Young’s leg is trapped up in between her body and Chiasson’s body. Chiasson is landing ground-and-pound – but it’s nothing that’s going to end the fight. Chiasson postures up and lands more significant ground-and-pound. The round ends. 20-18 Chiasson.

Round 3 – Chiasson throws a high kick to start Round 3, but it’s blocked. Young tries a high kick of her own, but Chiasson catches it. Chiasson drags the fight back down to the mat. On Young’s back, Chiasson threatens a choke. Chiasson tells the referee Young is grabbing her glove. Chiasson stops submission-seeking for a brief moment to land some punches. A short-notice replacement, Young is exhausted. Young rolls to her back, but only for a brief moment. Chiasson gets Young’s back and gets one hook in. As the horn sounds, Chiasson is working for a choke. MMA Junkie scores Round 3 a 10-8 and the fight 30-26 Chiasson.

Merab Dvalishvili vs. Casey Kenney

Round 1 – There’s a lot of movement from both fighters early in the opening round. Dvalishvili throws a kick, but it’s checked by Kenney. Throwing a kick of his own, Kenney rips the body. Kenney is constantly switching stances. Dvalishvili dashes toward Kenney, but doesn’t land on anything significant. Dvalishvili shoots for a takedown and almost gets it – key word: almost. Kenney escapes. Kenney lunges in, landing a right-left combination. Dvalishvili shoots for a takedown and dumps Kenney twice. In a millisecond, Kenney gets up both times. Dvalishvili gets a hold of Kenney’s legs and elevates. Dvalishvili is currently wearing Kenney like a backpack, reminiscent of the sequence leading up to Jose Torres vs. Jared Brooks (check out that highlight if you haven’t seen it). Sensing a potential slam, Kenney changes his grip and falls off the back. Dvalishvili lands a hard punch and they two fighters return to the center. Dvalishvili pushes Kenney up against the cage, but the round ends. 10-9 Dvalishvili

Round 2 – Both fighters come out with spinning attacks – and they both miss. Dvalishvili lands a hard leg kick. Kenney lands a left hand – and another. Dvalishvili shoots for a takedown and is pressing Kenney against the fence. Kenney scoots out the side door and runs to the center of the cage. Kenney throws a kick. Dvalishvili catches it, but Kenney slips his leg out of the subsequent takedown attempt. Dvalishvili lands a series of right hands. Both fighters are letting their hands go. Dvalishvili throws a barrage of spinning attacks, but none land. Dvalishvili shoots for another takedown and gets it. Leaning against the cage with Dvalishvili on his back, Kenney stands up. Dvalishvili is unwilling to give up on the takedown and he gets Kenney down again. Up and down, down and up they go. The round ends. 20-18 Dvalishvili

Round 3 – Dvalishvili digs a front kick into the stomach of Kenney. Things get wild for a few seconds, when both fighter flail punches in a speedy exchange. Dvalishvili knocks Kenney off balance. Likely sensing he needs a finish, Kenney is throwing power shots. Dvalishvili shoots for a takedown, but Kenney stuffs the attempt. Dvalishvili connects on a hard right hand. The fighters tie up and Dvalishvili has Kenney against the fence. Once again, Dvalishvili whips Kenney to the ground. Kenney grabs hold of a leg and gets back up. Kenney’s time in the upright position is short-lived. Dvalishvili grabs a double leg and gets it. Surprise, surprise – Kenney gets back to the feet only to be dumped again and again. Dvalishvili lands in mount and Kenney gives up his back. With both hooks in Dvalishvili tries to flatten Kenney out. The clock is winding down and it doesn’t look like he’ll have time to finish. Dvalishvili lands ground and pound, but Kenney perches up on his heels. The horn sounds in a pretty one-sided fight. MMA Junkie scores it 30-27 Dvalishvili.

Devin Clark vs. Dequan Townsend

Round 1 – A touch of gloves and we’re off. Townsend tries a high kick but Clark blocks it. Both fighters are a bit gun-shy, but eventually Clark breaks the ice with a takedown attempt. Clark is pressing Townsend up against the cage. After a whole lot of nothing, referee Jason Herzog separates the two fighters. Back in the center of the cage, Clark shoots again. Unlike the first attempt, Clark is successful and lands in half guard. In the final seconds of the round, Clark works his way to mount. A few short shorts are all Clark manages to get off before the round concludes. 10-9 Clark

Round 2 – Clark comes out firing a head kick. Townsend is keeping his distance with low hands. It looks like he’s leery of Clark’s takedown. Townsend throws a crisp two-punch combination, but both punches miss. Clark lands a right hand. Townsend lands a punch, but gets overzealous and slammed for his troubles. Clark is in side control and landing short elbows to Townsend’s head. Clark is looking to isolate Townsend’s arm for a submission. After landing more elbows, Clark elects to move to half guard. The round ends again with Clark on top. 20-18 Clark.

Round 3 – Townsend fires a hard combination, which misses. Townsend doesn’t throw often, and lands at an ever lower clip. When he does throw punches however, they have some serious zip behind them. Clark lands a jab. Townsend takes a big breath and resets, but to no avail. Clark shoots and gets another takedown. Clark is in Townsend’s guard and lands short shots. Townsend is clutching onto Clark, likely in an attempt to get the fight stood up. Clark is doing just enough to prevent the standup. For the remainder of the fight, Clark remains on top in guard. MMA Junkie scores it 30-27 Clark.

Scott Holtzman vs. Jim Miller

Round 1 – Holtzman tries a kick and Miller sweeps the leg. Holtzman’s butt hits the canvas, but only for a brief second. After Holtzman gets back up, Miller lands a hard inside leg kick. A left hand lands for Miller, while Holtzman whiffs on one his own. Miller lands a straight left hand. Miller goes back to the kick and lands successfully again. Faking a knee, Miller lands a left hand. Holtzman blocks a loud high kick from Miller, who chases him in a takedown attempt. Holtzman reverses Miller along the cage and lands a short punch and then, an elbow. They separate and Holtzman connects with a right hand  – and two more. This is the best offense Holtzman has landed thus far. Miller takes a step back and breathes. The right hands seem to have taken their toll on Miller who has noticeably slowed. Both fighters throw, but Miller connects harder. Holtzman answers. Miller throws a superman punch, but Holtzman evades. The round is over. 10-9 Miller.

Round 2 – Wasting no time, Miller and Holtzman both come out aggressive. After a few exchanges, Holtzman elects to initiate the clinch. Pushing Miller against the fence, before separating. Holtzman misses on a punch. Moments later, Miller shoots for a takedown and gets it. Holtzman gets up and tries to pry Miller’s grip. Holtzman succeeds in doing so and lands a combination on Miller. Both men are bleeding and Miller uncorks a hard left hand. Miller throws a head kick, but Holtzman blocks it. Holtzman lands a punch and then pushes Miller against the fence. Holtzman gets a takedown and is in Miller’s rubber guard. Miller is creeping his legs up, looking for a potential triangle attempt. Not liking Miller’s mission control, Holtzman gets up. Miller is still on his back and Holtzman dives into half guard. As the clock winds down, Holtzman opens up and lands heavy ground-and-pound on Miller, who is sitting in a pool of his own blood. Holtzman’s efforts in Round 2 ties it at 19-19.

Round 3 – According to the broadcast, in between rounds, Miller tells his corner there’s something wrong with his knee. Both men are wearing damage on their faces – especially Miller. About 90 seconds into the round, Holtzman resorts back to pushing Miller against the cage. Miller separates. Both fighters are sitting in the pocket, unafraid to trade. Holtzman lands a punch-body kick-punch combination, before clinching Miller again. Briefly, they separate and each fighter lands a punch. Miller is really bleeding now. Miller lands a knee to the face. They return to the center. The fatigue is visible, with Holtzman stumbling to the mat. Miller tries a head kick, but Holtzman slips and rips him with a right hand. As the clock hits the one-minute-left-in-the-round mark, Holtzman grabs hold of Miller again. The referee issues a warning to Holtzman for grabbing the cage. They return to the center. Holtzman lands a hard punch and waives Miller on. The two are exhausted, but look for the finish in the last ten seconds. Holtzman even attempts a Yair Rodriguez elbow – no dice. The round ends. MMA Junkie scores the fight 29-28 Holtzman.

John Dodson vs. Nathaniel Wood

Round 1 – Both fighters are showing off their quickness early, eluding each other’s sporadic striking combinations in the opening minute. Dodson charges in and lands a combination. Wood tries to fire back one of his own but misses. A theme is building: Wood is struggling to touch Dodson. Eventually, Wood lands a left hand as Dodson tries to circle away. Dodson lands a hard overhand left. Both fighters find success with punches in short exchanges. At one point, Wood muscles Dodson to the ground. Not long after, Dodson gets back to his feet. The round ends. 10-9 Wood.

Round 2 – There’s no change of gameplan for Dodson in Round 2 – he’s staying on the outside, just out of reach. Around 90 seconds into the round, Wood lands a front kick to the body. While Wood’s toes hit the stomach, his heel hit Dodson’s cup. The referee calls timeout, but the action resumes moments later. Dodson lands a nice combination, only to have his cup grazed again. Another timeout is called and Wood is warned. The referee tells Wood if it happens again, he’s going to lose a point. The action resumes and Dodson barrels at Wood. Dodson is pushing Wood against the fence. They separate. Wood lands a hard straight right hand. Now it’s Wood pressing Dodson against the cage. Dodson reverses position. Wood is bleeding. He’s cut above the left eye. The fighters separate. Immediately, the referee calls timeout and has the doctor check out Wood’s cut. The doctor gives the thumbs up and the fight continues. Upon the restart, the 10-second clacker whacks and both fighters exchange in the best action of the fight. Dodson does enough to even the fight at 19-19.

Round 3 – Early in the round, Dodson catches Wood coming in unprotected. Wood crashes to the canvas and Dodson pounces. Wood tries to roll over and get up, but Dodson lands a handful of follow-up punches. The referee waives it off and the New Mexico crowd goes into full celebration mode. That’s John Dodson’s first finish win since 2016.

Tim Means vs. Daniel Rodriguez

Round 1 – Means and Rodriguez waste no time in mixing it up. Means gets a takedown, but Rodriguez scoots up against the fence and circles back out. Rordriguez snaps a jab. Means lands a hard punch and a push kick to the stomach. Means grabs a hold of Rodriguez, but the UFC debutant shrugs him off. They separate and Rodriguez wings a pair of punches which miss. Rodriguez sticks a jab. Means has stalked Rodriguez the whole round, but Rodriguez is doing a good job of evading. Means lands a shot to the body. Rodriguez answers with a combination. With less than 20 seconds left in the round, Rodriguez lands an overhand left. Just as the horn sounds, Rodriguez lands another left which rocks Means. He’s saved by the bell, but clearly was hurt and staggered to his stool. For that, 10-9 Rodriguez.

Round 2 – Means seems to have recovered somewhat, but it doesn’t take long for Rodriguez to start piecing him up. The UFC debutant whacks Means with a hard combination – and another. Means has to do something to stop this momentum. Means lands a high kick and Means smiles. After a few more exchanges, Rodriguez drops Means, who pops right back up. Rodriguez is really turning it on here. Means is bleeding from his forehead – a minor cut. Rodriguez’s left is money. He connects on three straight lefts. Means is hurt and shoots for a sloppy takedown. Rodriguez gives what he’s offered and snatches Means’ neck. Rodriguez locks in a deep standing guillotine. Means drops to his knees but is stuck. There’s no escaping – and there’s the tap. What a debut for Daniel Rodriguez.

Yancy Medeiros vs. Lando Vannata

Round 1 – Vannata comes out awkwardly, per usual. He’s switching stances, moving unorthodoxly with his hands low. Medeiros lands a low kick, but Vannata answers with a one-two combination. Vannata throws a high kick. Medeiros tries to answer with the same strike, but Vannata catches it. Vannata lands a right cross, followed by an inside leg kick. He continues his striking success with landing a barrage of punches on Medeiros, who scoots out, seemingly unfazed. Medeiros is the aggressor, but is having trouble getting in range. Vannata lands a leg kick. Medeiros throws a body kick, which is caught by Vannata. Medeiros lands an outside leg kick and blocks a Vannata high kick – just as the Round 1 horn sounds. 10-9 Vannata.

Round 2 – Vannata lands a combination to the head, then goes low with another leg kick. Medeiros lands a short right hand. Vannata answers with a body kick and attempts a foot sweep, which fails. Vannata’s nose is red and may be bleeding slightly. Medeiros is still struggling to reach Vannata, so he points to the center of the cage and issues a challenge. Vannata doesn’t acknowledge and continues Vannata-ing. Medeiros is letting his hands go a little more here, just past the three-minute mark of the round. Medeiros lands a straight punch. Vannata hits Medeiros with a nice left – and then a right. Vannata shoots for a takedown and briefly gets control of Medeiros’ back, standing against the cage. However, Medeiros swiftly scotts out. Vannata whacks Medeiros in the body with a punch. As the 10-second horn sounds, Vannata connects with a kick to the body. Still standing, Medeiros folds up like a lawn chair, but quickly unfolds back up. That’s the end of the round. It was closer than Round 1, but still clear cut in favor of Vannata. 20-18 Vannata.

Round 3 – Medeiros lands an inside leg kick. Vannata tries a spin kick, which woos the crowd. Vannata connects on an inside hook upstairs, before going downstairs with a leg kick. Medeiros misses on a one-two combo. Blood is streaming out of the nose of Medeiros, who slips and eats a big right hand from Vannata. The body of Medeiros has become a target, as he absorbs yet another kick. He’s visibly not liking those. Vannata lands back-to-back right hands. Medeiros lands a glancing straight left. Medeiros flexes and Vannata tries to take him out with a wheel kick. It whiffs. Vannata tries a takedown, but fails. Medeiros lands a body punch which seemed to bother Vannata. Medeiros connects. The two exchange – and both eat punches. The best action of the fight is halted by the final bell. MMA Junkie scores it 30-27 Vannata.

Rogerio Bontorin vs. Ray Borg

Round 1 – Borg throws and misses. In response, Bontorin makes him pay with a punch. Bontorin stuffs a Borg takedown attempt. The two fighters clinch and Bontorin controls Borg against the fence. Not much action going on here. Straining for a takedown, Bontorin is unable to get Borg down. Borg uses a slide-by maneuver to grab hold of Bontorin and get him to the mat. Borg is in Bontorin’s half guard. Borg lands an elbow. Bontorin is attempting to isolate Borg’s left arm. He’s creeping his legs up higher and higher on Borg’s back. Eventually, Bontorin quits eying the submission and scoots his butt back against the cage. Bontorin elevates from sitting to standing, but eats a big right hand and is taken down again. The round ends with Borg on top. 10-9 Borg.

Round 2 – Right away, Borg shoots for a takedown. It’s a power struggle right now. Borg is fighting hard for a takedown, but Bontorin is doing an excellent job defending. Eventually, Borg’s relentlessness pays off. Borg scrambles right to the back of Bontorin, on the canvas against the cage. Wearing Borg as a backpack, Bontorin stands up. Borg locks in the body triangle and the hand-fighting begins. Borg is landing some punches from the back, trying to open up Bontorin’s neck for a choke. Borg tries to snatch a rear-naked choke, but doesn’t have a good grip. Borg lets go and goes back to whacking Bontorin. After breaking the body triangle, Bontorin threatens a kimura. However, Borg isn’t in trouble and secures another takedown. With Borg in his half guard, Bontorin is leaking from his nose – the facet is on. Now in Bontorin’s full guard, Borg rains punishment down with consecutive elbows. Bontorin throws an illegal upkick, but the action continues. Borg scrambles to the back of Bontorin, who stands up. Round 3 – Bontorin enters the clinch, which proves to be a mistake. Once again, Borg utilizes a slide-by. Quickly, he gets Bontorin’s back. However, the Brazilian stands up – and is slammed back down. Borg smacks Bontorin with a pair of punches. Bontorin stands back up. Borg, once again, is on Bontorin’s back with two hooks in. Despite his attempts to wiggle Borg off, Bontorin can’t shake the former UFC title challenger. Eventually, Borg slips off and lands a hard standing knee to Bontorin’s temple. This hasn’t pretty, but Borg’s grappling is the X-factor here. He drags Bontorin to the mat again. Borg is in Bontorin’s half guard and eventually lands in full guard. Bontorin scotts to the fence again and gets to his feet. For the seemingly millionth time, Borg puts Bontorin’s back on the mat. The horn signals the end of the fight. That was another 10-8 for Borg – total domination. MMA Junkie scores the fight 30-25 Borg.

Kazula Vargas vs. Brok Weaver

Round 1 – Both fighters exchange kicks. Weaver throws a kick, but it’s caught by Vargas. Off balance, Weaver stumbles backward. Vargas tries a flying knee and then shoots for a takedown, which he gets. Vargas has Weaver’s legs tied up on the ground, but he isn’t able to muster up much – if any – offense. Weaver sneaks his arm over Vargas’ head and attempts a guillotine choke. This looks tight. Vargas is straining, but he pops his head out. Now, Vargas is in Weaver’s guard. Weaver gets back to his feet, but is put back down. After a scramble. Vargas is standing. Weaver is grounded, trying to get back to his feet. After attempting a few punches, Vargas knees Weaver in the head. That was totally illegal. Oh man, Weaver went out there. This fight is over – and not in the fashion anyone was hoping it’d go down. The referee is ruling it a disqualification – and probably rightfully so. That was bad.
