USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA rankings, Jan. 30: ‘Jacare’ remains in title picture
While the UFC’s middleweight title picture has been a bit confusing in recent times, there’s no doubt Ronaldo Souza belongs in the discussion.
At this past weekend’s UFC on FOX 27 event, “Jacare” was looking to rebound from an nine-month layoff, not to mention a pair of surgeries. Facing fellow contender Derek Brunson, Souza was out to prove to the world that even at 38, he’s still a relevant contender for the UFC’s 185-pound title.
Mission accomplished.
Souza, feared for his submission skills, scored a first-round knockout in the UFC on FOX 27 headliner, cementing his current No. 5 spot in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA middleweight rankings. Certainly a No. 1 contender fight lies on the horizon.
