Video: Joe Schilling suffers brutal knockout loss at Bellator 229

When Joe Schilling fights, you know someone’s lights are probably going out.

A truly do-or-die fighter, Schilling (4-6 MMA, 3-3 BMMA) took a kill shot to the head from “Dana White’s Contender Series” alumni Tony Johnson (8-3 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) at Bellator 229.

Bellator 229 took place Friday at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif. The main card aired on Paramount and streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

The first round started with Schilling in control on the feet. As the clock wound down, Johnson dropped the former kickboxing champ and nearly finished the fight with a D’Arce choke.

The second round was more Schilling. He dropped Johnson twice with leg kicks, which became his main weapon as he entered the third. Schilling’s efforts would all be for not.

In Round 3, Johnson countered Schilling with a short left hook. The shot sent a crumpled Schilling flopping to the mat. A follow-up shot didn’t make a difference, except adding more insult to injury.

The 36-year-old AKA product has now won four fights in a row, while Schilling had a two-fight winning streak snapped.
