Video: Maurice Greene scores out-of-nowhere submission over Gian Villante

Gian Villante dropped Maurice Greene with a left hook during the third round of their UFC on ESPN 12 heavyweight main card bout Saturday night, and it sure seemed like the fight’s end was near.

That turned out to be the case, but not in a way most were expecting. With Villante in top position and seemingly well positioned to finish things off, Greene pulled an arm-triangle choke out of nowhere and got the submission victory at the 3:44 mark of the final round at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

After what had been a back-and-forth, grueling fight, an emotional Greene, who had lost two fights in a row, broke down before regaining his composure and explaining what the victory meant to him in his post-fight interview. Greene is planning on moving his family to Albuquerque, N.M., to train full time at Jackson Wink MMA, where he held his camp for his fight, but was worried a loss would get him cut from the UFC.

“Two-fight skid, my job was kind of on the line tonight,” Greene said.
“I wanted to move my family and I had to win to move my family. We got it done. This is an amazing feeling.”
