Bellator postpones next three shows due to coronavirus concerns

The turnaround point is not yet in sight in the ongoing battle against coronavirus. And as such, Bellator continues to demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the health and safety of their athletes and employees in the wake of the worldwide pandemic.

The company’s May events have been officially postponed. MMA Junkie confirmed a Monday report by ESPN with a source who had knowledge of the situation. The promotion later confirmed the news in a press release.

“As always, the health and safety of our athletes, fans, partners and staff remains our top priority,” the statement read. “We appreciate the understanding and patience of everyone involved during this incredibly difficult time.”

The postponed events are Bellator 242 on May 9 at SAP Center in San Jose, Calif.; Bellator Europe 8 on May 16 at SSE Arena, Wembley, in London; and Bellator 242 at Pechanga Resort Casino in Temecula, Calif. According to the release, full refunds for ticket-buyers will be available.

Bellator 242 was scheduled to be headlined by a pair of title fights in Ryan Bader’s light heavyweight title defense against Vadim Nemkov and the vacant middleweight title fight between Gegard Mousasi and Douglas Lima. The London card was set to feature James Gallagher vs. Cal Ellenor. Bellator 243 was to be the promotional debut of two-time former UFC title challenger Liz Carmouche, in a main-event bout against unbeaten Mandy Bohm.

In a press release, Bellator CEO Scott Coker also stated the company plans on rescheduling the events as soon as possible. Customers who want refunds can get them at point of purchase.

The next event on the Bellator schedule which has not been canceled is Bellator 244 on June 6 in Chicago.

At the onset of the pandemic, the company canceled Bellator 241, which was to be a closed-door event at Mohegun Sun Arena in Connecticut, on the day of the show.
