Ray Borg admits he regrets social media retirement promise if he missed weight

Ray Borg admits that he was never going to retire if he missed weight, despite going on record saying that he would.

Borg (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC), who’s been plagued with issues making weight throughout his career, took to Instagram last April – after missing the 135-pound mark against Casey Kenney – to vow that he would walk away from the sport if he ever missed weight again.

Unfortunately for Borg, he ended up missing the flyweight mark by two pounds in his most recent fight, against Rogerio Bontorin in February, but didn’t follow up on his promise.

He has since deleted the post and explained that the post came from a genuine place of confidence, that he wasn’t going to have any more weight mishaps.

“Yeah, you say a lot of crazy (expletive) when you’re trying to campaign for a fight,” Borg told MMA Junkie. “When you really want to fight, sometimes you tweet some stuff that you may not mean in the long run and I guess I just had such sure confidence. You just don’t walk away from the sport with something like that. I couldn’t walk away.

“I couldn’t let my son know I walked away from the sport because of that, so I guess that’s why I’m so eager to fight, because I’m tired of this weight cut (expletive) hanging over my head,” he said. “I know there’s only one way to make it go away and that’s to make weight and put on a great fight.”

Borg has won his last two in a row and was scheduled to face Marlon Vera in a bantamweight bout at UFC 249 on Apr. 18 before the UFC was forced to scrap the event.
