Megan Anderson: Felicia Spencer ‘an amazing athlete,’ but Amanda Nunes will be too much at UFC 250

Megan Anderson will certainly have her eyes on the upcoming women’s featherweight championship fight at UFC 250.

Dual champion Amanda Nunes will put her 145-pound title on the line for the first time against Felicia Spencer on June 6 at the event expected to take place at UFC Apex in Las Vegas, pending approval from the Nevada Athletic Commission

Anderson shared the same card as Spencer in February, where both women emerged victorious with first-round finishes, but the promotion ultimately awarded the title shot to Spencer, who holds a win over Anderson.

Nunes most likely will be the betting favorite going into her fight with Spencer, with whom she shares a common opponent in Cris Cyborg. Though Spencer put a valiant effort against Cyborg, Anderson thinks Nunes will pose more of a threat.

“I see it being a little more difficult for Felicia than her fight against Cris Cyborg,” Anderson told MMA Junkie. “I think Amanda is a better well rounded striker, and she has a more dangerous ground game I would say. I wouldn’t say dangerous. Felicia is incredibly talented, and she has a lot of skills on the ground, but I just think Amanda brings that wrestling mentality. She goes for position over submission, she likes to do damage, and I think she’s very heavy on top. So that could pose some problems for Felicia.”

Spencer is a solid grappler herself, with her two most recent finishes coming on the ground. Anderson is familiar with Spencer’s ground game and thinks she’ll be game if the fight hits the mat, but Anderson sees Nunes being too stern of a test overall.

“Felicia is very, very – her pathway on the ground is very high level,” Anderson said. “She has a very good system, and she is very sneaky on the ground with her offensive submission game, so even if she does end up being on her back in a bad position, I see her being able to create space to throw up some submissions, which could cause Amanda some issues. But I think it’s going to be a lot harder for Felicia to take it to the ground, just because of how good Amanda’s range control and the power that she brings.

“Felicia was having some issues with Zarah, closing that gap against like a lengthier striker, so obviously I’m gonna give Amanda the slight advantage in skill and power over Zarah, so I just don’t see it working better in Felicia’s favor. I think she’s incredibly tough and has a lot of skills, and she’s an amazing athlete, but I think it’s a tough fight for her.”

While Anderson is most likely next in line, she doesn’t plan on waiting around for a title shot, hoping to return to action within the next couple of months.
