Callout Collection: Who UFC on ESPN 12 winners want next – and how likely they’ll get them

Earning wins in the UFC is certainly no easy task, but what comes next is often even more important: the post-fight callout.

So after Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 12 event in Las Vegas, who took advantage of their time on the mic? See below for this week’s Callout Collection – and just how realistic each one is.

* * * * *

First up, let’s take a look at the preliminary card …

Tanner Boser and Maurice Greene

Want to fight: Each other!

Boser’s callout: “Throw me on ‘Fight Island,’ and I’ll tell you what. If Maurice Greene beats Gian Villante, he turned me down in August and he wanted a Top 15 guy and instead, he got smoked by Sergei Pavlovich. He wants to fight me on ‘Fight Island.’ He told me at the pool a few days ago a couple of beers deep that he would be ready again to fight on ‘Fight Island.’ So you want to fight on ‘Fight Island?’ You can’t duck me now. Fight me on ‘Fight Island.’”

Greene’s response: “It wasn’t no dust-up – I was just being cordial, but I guess he didn’t take it like that. But anyway, just so you know, big homie, let this heal up (and) you can meet me on the Island any day of the week. I wasn’t dodging you, bro. I just didn’t want to fight a no-name when I was a Top 15 and I was trying to move up the rankings, not down. So if you wanna get it, you let me know, man. Once I can get cleared, bro, we can get it in.”

The reality: A fight week exchange by the pool turned into a heavyweight rivalry that looks set to be settled inside the octagon. At least, it should be. Both Tanner Boser and Maurice Greene scored stoppage victories in their respective fights at UFC on ESPN 12, and after Boser defeated Philipe Lins and issued a perfectly-pitched call to fight Greene, “The Crochet Boss” responded with a dramatic submission of Gian Villante and duly accepted the challenge.

This is the stuff of matchmakers’ dreams. Two heavyweights picking a fight with each other after fighting – and winning – on the same card? It’s like a perfect storm. Both coming off wins, both relatively unscathed, both on the same timeline and, crucially, both willing to throw down with each other.

If they’re good to go, that final “Fight Island” card on July 25 might just have room for one more bout. Failing that, bring them back to the Apex in August. Either way, it’s a heavyweight fight with some heat under it, and one that could produce an exciting clash. I say book it.
