Former UFC title challenger Ray Borg announces MMA retirement

Ray Borg has decided to hang up his gloves.

The former UFC flyweight title challenger announced his retirement from the sport Wednesday. The 27-year-old Borg (13-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) made the announcement on his Instagram.

“Been in this game for a solid 14 years, never did I think retirement would come at the age of 27,” Borg posted. “But some decisions are harder than others and I have to make sure I am making the right one for my family. I appreciate all the love the MMA community has shown my family over the years but it may be time to move on to the next chapter of my life. Much love everyone!”

Borg last fought in May and suffered a split decision loss to Ricky Simon in his return to the bantamweight division. He was released in early August after his removal from a fight against Nathan Maness at UFC on ESPN+ 31. The UFC did not disclose a reason for Borg’s removal from the fight.

Borg’s UFC career had several hiccups. He missed weight for four UFC bouts. He also withdrew from eight scheduled fights due to a range of reasons from injury, illness cutting weight, issues involving his son’s health, and injuries suffered from Conor McGregor’s infamous bus attack.

But Borg also achieved plenty in his career. He won seven UFC bouts and challenged Demetrious Johnson for the flyweight title in 2017. He remained a contender for several years and won two $50,000 ‘Performance of the Night’ bonuses. Borg also walks away with notable victories over Louis Smolka and Jussier Formiga.
