Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield might happen after all, according to Tyson. But a small hurdle still remains.
One day after Holyfield representatives claimed “Iron Mike” turned down $25 million to box Holyfield a third time, Tyson voiced confidence in a May 29 showdown during an interview with Haute Living.
“I can see that happening, being in there, me and Holyfield, yeah,” Tyson said. “(The) only thing we have to do is get some small, fundamental difference in paperwork done and it’s on to the races with me and Evander.”
The roadblock, Tyson indicated, is the role of a promoter in the event. Tyson doesn’t view promoters as a necessary part of the equation for a fight like the potential one against Holyfield and doesn’t seem keen on having them involved.
“We don’t need promoters,” Tyson said. “Promoters – what’s a promoter? (An) overrated cheerleader? They tell the fighter how great he is: ‘Yeah, you’re the best. You’ll beat everybody.’ What do you need (them for)? I like the promoters, personally, but what do you need somebody in that position of business (for) to dictate your business? Now you’ve got to be nice to this guy (and) kiss his ass because he’s the boss? No. You shouldn’t have to do that. You should just have to go get the check and do whatever the hell you want to do and not talk to nobody, right?”
If Tyson, 54, and Holyfield, 58, fight, it’ll be for the third time. In November 1996, Holyfield stopped Tyson with a TKO in Round 11. In June 1997, the two heavyweights rematched. The second meeting ended in disqualification after Tyson bit Holyfield on the ear twice. The fight was given the nickname “The Bite Fight.” Tyson received a “permanent” suspension and his license was revoked. He was fined $3 million and had to partake in community service.
Over the years, Tyson and Holyfield have become friends. When push comes to shove, Tyson is confident the third fight against Holyfield will happen – and he’s confident he’ll win again.
“I just want everybody to know the fight is on with me and (Evander) Holyfield,” Tyson said. “Holyfield is a humble man. I know that. He’s a man of God, but I’m God’s man. Listen, I’m going to be successful May 29.”
