There’s a new name to discuss in the UFC’s welterweight title picture.
Belal Muhammad capped off a big 2021 with a UFC Fight Night 199 decision victory over former title challenger Stephen Thompson, earning rather dominant scores of 30-25, 30-26 and 30-26 in the night’s co-main event.
With the result, Muhammad (20-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) makes a big move from No. 15 all the way to No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings, putting him in line for an elite opponent in his next outing. It’s a result that also sees Thompson (16-6-1 MMA, 11-6-1 UFC) tumble slightly, falling from No. 6 down two slots to No. 8.
Of course, that wasn’t the only division that got a new look following an exciting UFC event. From new names like Mateusz Gamrot (20-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) and Melissa Gatto (8-0-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC), to perennial contenders such as Derrick Lewis (26-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) and Raquel Pennington (13-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC), there was plenty of movement to be made following the event.
