Ecuador’s Michael Morales gets hero’s welcome, key to city after UFC debut win

Michael Morales’s first win in the UFC was well received back home.

The UFC newcomer impressed many in his promotional debut. Morales (13-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) quickly dispatched veteran Trevin Giles with a first-round TKO in the opening bout of the UFC 270 main card in Anaheim, Calif., earlier this month.

It was a monumental moment for Morales, whoh kept his undefeated record and debuted in the biggest MMA promotion with a first-round finish. But it wasn’t only important for him and his team at Entram Gym.

Morales received a warm welcome from the people of Ecuador when he returned to his hometown of Pasaje.

“There was a really big caravan and there was a ton of people,” Morales told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “I was on top of a truck and many people were behind me in cars and motorcycles. I was saying hi to everyone. Then there was a small reunion in the center of the city and I was given the key to the city, other accolades and a trophy.

“It was a really nice experience from my city, Pasaje. At the end of that reunion, police escorted me out and took me home. Some people followed me home and were outside for a long time until late. It was crazy and I was super happy that people felt that victory, that win for Ecuador.”

Morales knew he had a strong support from his country, but he admitted he was surprised by the reaction of his UFC win. The 22-year-old didn’t expect the amount of backing he received and said he’s happy to know Ecuador and Pasaje have his back.

“It’s been huge (for me),” Morales said. “I thought I already had the support, but I had no idea how much bigger it could get. I’ve seen how passionate people are and how proud they are to see a fellow countryman succeed.

“My social media is blowing up with tons of people sending good vibes and good messages. I’m so happy people enjoyed the victory and that triumph. It was huge and I’m very happy. I’m extremely grateful with everyone ,including everyone that greeted me at the airport and followed me all the way home.”

Morales and Marlon Vera are the only two Ecuadorians currently in the UFC. Morales hopes his UFC debut win does much more than strengthen his fan base.

“I feel I have even more responsibility to do well,” Morales said. “I need to improve a ton in MMA. I’ve had many doors open up for me and I hope it’s the same for my other Ecuadorians. Hopefully, God willing, this year we can get in three or more (Ecuadorians). That’s the goal – that we all make it to this great company and compete in the UFC.”
