The heavyweight division appears to have a new name among the elite.
Tom Aspinall entered the main event of UFC Fight Night 204 against Alexander Volkov expecting a five-round affair. However, Aspinall (12-2 MMA, 5-0 UFC) surprised himself by securing a submission finish of Volkov (34-10 MMA, 8-4 UFC) in the first round, forcing his name into the conversation among the best in the division.
The title picture is unclear, which could work out in Aspinall’s favor sooner than expected. Current heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou is on the mend for potentially nine months after surgery, Jon Jones has yet to make his expected heavyweight debut, Stipe Miocic is still around, and Tai Tuivasa has also made his case to be in the mix. But where does Aspinall fit in the picture?
Our “Spinning Back Clique ” panel of Nolan King, Matthew Wells, and Brian “Goze” Garcia discuss where Aspinall belongs in the division while also playing matchmaker with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia. You can check out the discussion in the video above.
