JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Darian Weeks isn’t concerned with the attention that Ian Garry brings to their UFC 273 matchup.
Entering his second UFC bout on the heels of a short-notice debut loss, Weeks (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) has plenty to prove against a highly-touted opponent. While Garry (8-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) has the hype, Weeks finds himself in a position to secure his first UFC victory while derailing the momentum of his opponent.
“They want to make sure that he’s the real deal,” Weeks told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “So they put him up against the biggest test of his career so far, and we’re going to find out.”
In his December debut, Weeks stepped up on short notice against Bryan Barberena to fill in for Matt Brown who tested positive for COVID-19. It was a big opportunity to compete in the UFC, although the situation was not ideal for him. On Saturday, he will look to rectify that against an undefeated prospect.
“I didn’t get to show everything I was capable of,” Weeks said. “This time, I won’t make that same mistake. I had five finishes early in my career, and I’m going to show people why I have five finishes.”
