Ex-UFC champion Frankie Edgar non-committal on next move: ‘Still a lot of undecided stuff’

"

Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar isn’t ready to announce his future plans just yet.

Edgar, 40, is currently enduring a rough patch in his career having lost four of his past five bouts, three by stoppage. He’s coming off a front-kick knockout loss to Marlon Vera last November at UFC 268 and recently underwent back surgery.

Following his loss to Vera, Edgar (24-10-1 MMA, 18-10-1 UFC) claimed he was unsure of retirement, and it appears he’s yet to reach a conclusion.

“I don’t know, we’ll see,” Edgar told MMA Junkie Radio. “I’m still seeing what’s next. No decisions on anything right now.”

He continued, “I’m doing the goals that I want to do. I’ve accomplished a lot in this game. I’m just being myself and finishing this out. We’ll see how we finish this out. Still a lot of undecided stuff.”

A former 155-pound champ and a multiple-time UFC featherweight title challenger, Edgar sought new life when he moved down to 135 pounds in 2020. The move initially proved to be a good one for the always undersized Edgar, who outlasted Pedro Munhoz in his 135-pound debut at UFC on ESPN 15.

But things took a turn when he suffered back-to-back knockout losses to Cory Sandhagen and Vera. Although he looked competitive against Vera before getting clipped in Round 3, the loss had many questioning if it’s time for “The Answer” to hang it up. It’s been six months since Edgar’s last fight and at least for now, he doesn’t yet have the answer in regards to his future.

Matt Brown thought he would get a dream retirement scenario to end his MMA career. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen that way. Brown announced Saturday that he was hanging up his UFC gloves after a 28-fight stint with the promotion in which he went 15-13 and racked up a number...

Just like he did throughout his career, Nursulton Ruziboev hopes he can bounce around weight classes in the UFC. Ruziboev (34-8-2 MMA, 2-0 UFC) drops back down to welterweight to face Joaquin Buckley (18-6 MMA, 8-4 UFC) in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 56 (ESPN/ESPN+) co-headliner at Enterprise Center in...
