Gillian Robertson believes she’ll outmatch Sarah Frota at UFC 240: ‘Her jiu-jitsu is not on my level’

EDMONTON – It’s no secret that Gillian Robertson is looking to take the fight to the mat, as she hopes to add another submission win to her resume.

Robertson (6-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) takes on Sarah Frota (9-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) this Saturday at Rogers Place in Edmonton. The preliminary bout streams on ESPN+ ahead of additional prelims on ESPN and a main card on pay-per-view.

Five of Robertson’s six wins have come by the way of submission, and she believes she’ll have a major advantage over Frota on the ground.

“I feel like I’m just going to outmatch her,” Robertson told MMA Junkie. “I feel like her wrestling isn’t up to my level and her jiu-jitsu isn’t up to my level.”

Tied for the most finishes in UFC women’s flyweight division history, Robertson admits she would have liked to have faced a bigger name at UFC 240. Now she hopes a definitive win over Frota will give her the notable opponent she’s looking for in the division.

“I definitely think that’s the thing that’s going to get me one of the big names,” Robertson said. “You said most finishes in the division, I believe Valentina has three right now, she’s tied with me, Montana De La Rosa, too, but I feel like after this fight, that’s definitely going to be a talking point, you know?”

“It’s definitely a little let down that it’s not a bigger name, but no matter what, it’s a step forward, hopefully a $50,000 fight for me and just keep moving forward, and I’ll get one of the bigger names after.”

The Canadian-born Robertson will fight in her native country for the first time in her MMA career. Having already fought in four different countries during her young UFC career, Robertson said it will be nice for her to get some crowd support for a change.

“It means the world to me to fight here,” Robertson said. “My last three, four fights have been in my opponent’s hometowns. I’ve gotten booed walking out, I got chanted, You will die!’ in Brazil, the worst of everything, so to actually have people cheering for me, it’s going to be a change, and it’s going to be nice.”

In the cage, Robertson continues to develop her all-around MMA game, but the ultimate goal always remains the same for Robertson: Get the fight to ground and submit her opponent.

“I’m just trying to develop myself as the best mixed martial artist I can,” Robertson said. “Obviously jiu-jitsu is my strong point, but I want to develop my standup enough so that I can get it to the ground, so then it’s like no matter what, a girl won’t have a chance. She’ll be forced into my world.”

So how does she envision the fight with Frota going down? As you’d expect.

“Just looking for the throat, looking for the rear-naked choke,” Robertson said. That’s my thing, and I feel like I’m able to get it on anyone.”
