EDMONTON – UFC president Dana White has talked – and griped – about a rematch between ex-champ Cris Cyborg and two-division titleholder Amanda Nunes, all before Cyborg’s fight against Felicia Spencer at UFC 240.
White’s comments could be taken as a sign that he doesn’t think much of Spencer’s chances against the ex-champ on Saturday. Spencer doesn’t see it that way, though.
“It’s not personal,” she told MMA Junkie at a media day for the pay-per-view event at Rogers Place. “I’ve never even met Dana or spoken with him in any form. So it’s not like he has any personal tie to me.
“UFC’s trying to run a business and make sure that their ducks are in a row for their future. But I just have to be able to have a good performance and earn the attention.”
Spencer (7-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) might be green as a UFC fighter, but she still believes she can be a star if she comes through against Cyborg (20-2 MMA, 5-1 UFC). Just the fact that she got the fight is an indication that anything can happen, and her aim is of course to take advantage.
In Spencer’s mind, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that she could take Cyborg’s place to take on the celebrated Nunes (18-4 MMA, 10-1 UFC).
“It’s amazing to think my third fight in the UFC could be a title fight, and I could be a UFC champion at 9-0,” she said. “It’s pretty crazy.”
