‘Bellator Featherweight Grand Prix Countdown,’ No. 1: ‘This is some Kumite-type sh*t’

The Bellator featherweight grand prix is right around the corner, and the promotion has rolled out its “Countdown” series to take a closer look at the tournament.

The 16-man, single-elimination tournament gets underway Sept. 7 at Bellator 226 from SAP Center in San Jose, Calif., where half of the first-round fights will take place. The other half is set for Bellator 228 on Sept. 28 at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., where champion Patricio Freire will attempt to make his first title defense against Juan Archuleta.

The title will be up for grabs throughout the tournament, with the ultimate winner earning $1 million.

Here’s Bellator’s description of the first “Countdown” episode:

For some, it’s been their life’s mission. A way to add to their storied legacy. For others it’s a opportunity to prove they are the new talent, the new breed of fighter waiting to usher in the next era of mixed martial arts.” We introduce the Featherweight World Grand Prix.
