Dana White says UFC Hall of Famer B.J. Penn officially released from UFC contract

UFC president Dana White recently said that his working relationship with B.J. Penn was over. Now it’s official.

On Thursday, White told Yahoo! Sports that Penn (16-14-1 MMA, 12-13-1 UFC), a UFC Hall of Famer and former UFC welterweight and lightweight champion, has been released from his contract with the promotion.

The decision to part ways with Penn comes on the heels of a string of outside-the-octagon incidents involving the Hawaiian.

Two videos that came up recently, released by TMZ, showed Penn punching a man outside the Lava Shack bar in Hawaii, then being knocked out by the same man on the street.

Aside from the incidents away from the cage, his career inside it hasn’t gone well, either. Penn has lost his past seven fights and has won just once in his past 11 in a run that stretches back to 2010. But despite his poor results inside the cage, White previously told media members he would give Penn one final fight inside the octagon. He was set to face Nik Lentz later this year, though the fight hadn’t been formally announced by the UFC.

But those plans have now officially been scrapped, with White following through on his previous comments.

“He won’t fight again. That’s it. That’s a wrap,” White told ESPN three weeks ago. “It’s not even that this was the last straw. I didn’t love him continuing to fight anyway. But when you have the relationship that he and I have, and he’s getting me on the phone begging me for another fight, begging me for another opportunity, it’s hard for me to turn him down.

“But after what I saw on that video, B.J. needs to focus on his personal life and get himself together before he thinks about fighting again.”

Penn’s tenure with the UFC now officially comes to an end. But now the 40-year-old is free of contractual ties, meaning he is eligible to sign with other combat sports organizations.
