Dana White on Conor McGregor return: ‘The Frankie Edgar fight isn’t going to happen’

Conor McGregor has his sights set on a fight with Frankie Edgar, but the UFC boss isn’t interested.

In an interview with the Boston Herald released Thursday, UFC president Dana White shot down the prospect of the two former lightweight champions fighting against each other.

“I said it leading into the Mayweather fight: ‘He may never fight again after this fight when you make this kind of money,” White said. “He’s fought once since then.

“Conor loves to fight and wants to fight again, but the Frankie Edgar fight isn’t going to happen.”

There are a number of reasons why White isn’t interested in a potential showdown between McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) and Edgar (23-7-1 MMA, 17-7-1 UFC), which the UFC boss highlighted.

“Edgar is two weight classes below him,” McGregor said. “(Edgar) was supposed to fight Aljamain Sterling. Aljamain fell out and got hurt. Frankie is coming to the end of his career, and he could end up getting himself into a title position again. To take the Conor fight makes no sense.”

As for Conor’s future, White didn’t elaborate in detail. McGregor hasn’t competed since October 2018, but White is confident fans will see “The Notorious” fight again.

“I think Conor will fight next year,” White said.

The rivalry between McGregor and Edgar stems back to 2015, when McGregor earned the featherweight title with a 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo. At the time of that victory, Edgar was one of the division’s leading contenders. However, a McGregor title defense never materialized and neither did the Edgar bout.

Wednesday on Twitter, McGregor called for a matchup with Edgar in December. “The Answer” responded touting his acceptance and put the onus on the UFC and White. McGregor issued one final reply, in which he said he would donate his entire fight purse to first responders.
