Gilbert Burns continued a successful campaign in the welterweight division.
The Brazilian fighter picked up a first-round TKO win over former title challenger Demian Maia on Saturday night at UFC on ESPN+ 28.
The welterweight bout was the co-main event at Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, Brazil. It aired on ESPN and streamed on ESPN+.
After getting taken down by Maia (28-10 MMA, 22-10 UFC) and surviving his infamous back take, Burns (18-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC) managed to get the fight back to the feet where he connected with a sharp left hook, sending Maia straight to the canvas.
Burns hesitated, thinking the shot ended the fight, but the referee didn’t jump in. Burns then followed up with rapid ground-and-pound, forcing the referee to waive off the fight at the 2:34 mark.
“Durinho” is now 3-0 since moving back up to the welterweight division in August 2019.
In his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping, Burns used the mic time to send a message to recent title challenger and controversial figure Colby Covington.
“You’re going to see me, you’re going to see me,” Burns said. “I’m going to beat you up. I’m going to get you.”
