After seeing Yoel Romero win big, Walt Harris adamant about suing supplement maker

SAN ANTONIO – Yoel Romero got the MMA world’s attention when he won a default judgement against a supplement company he sued in the wake of a positive drug test.

The $27.45 million payout associated with the decision really got heavyweight Walt Harris’ attention. A former teammate of Romero at American Top Team, he hit up Romero to see if the award was legit.

“He made me go from adamant about it to this will get done before this year’s over,” Harris told reporters, including MMA Junkie, in advance of his fight at UFC on ESPN 4 against Aleksei Oleinik.

Harris vowed to sue the maker and distributor of a supplement found to be tainted with an anabolic agent, which resulted in a suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency and the overturning of a win over ex- UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. He originally faced a two-year term before the tainted supplement was identified.

Romero faced a similar situation and wound up with a six-month USADA suspension. Like Harris, he maintained his innocence from the start.

It should be noted that a default judgement doesn’t guarantee Romero will collect the lofty figure. But Harris professes it’s not all about a potential reward.

“I’m not concerned about the money,” he said. “It’s my reputation and character that’s on the line. I’ve been clean and doing this thing the right way, for something like that to happen to me at this stage of my career, I’m like, c’mon.”

That said, don’t expect Harris to become the next great benefactor to social causes.

“I ain’t no Bill Gates yet,” he said. “I’m going to donate a little bit. Don’t get me wrong. My coach has some visions and goals. We’re trying to make this thing big for Alabama. That money is going to go to a good cause to build our state, build MMA and keep doing what we’re doing.

“Of course, I’m going to keep fighting when the settlement check hits. But I’m going to be fighting with a whole lot of back end. It’s going to be Gucci everything.”
