Alexandre Pantoja explains why you’ll never hear him trash talk, unlike Colby Covington

LAS VEGAS – Alexandre Pantoja won’t decrease his standards to increase controversy, even if it means his bank account takes a hit.

In a week that included press conference insults regarding dead family members and sexual assault, Pantoja (27-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) made it clear after his UFC 296 title defense, that he will only contribute respect to the build-up of his fights.

Pantoja was on stage as Colby Covington insulted Leon Edwards’ dead father. Conversely, Pantoja gave opponent Brandon Royval nothing but respect – a total deviation from the event’s headliners.

“I do not agree with everything Sean Strickland said, but this time, I’m with him,” Pantoja told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “He talked a lot, too. I don’t like when he talks about the family division. That’s the job for all the families. That’s a payment. Imagine if you’re talking about your job. That’s so disrespectful. … Why did Colby (Covington) say it? I think most fighters say that’s the most bullsh*t trash talking ever. I’m not really close with my father. I respect a lot Leon Edwards. Everything he’s doing for his family and his country.”

A proud sportsman and representative of Brazil, Pantoja hopes his next title defense takes place in his home country – an idea UFC CEO Dana White indicated he’s warm to. The promotion is expected to return in 2024, but no official event has been announced at this time.

Brazil needs a hero, said Pantoja.

“I’ve fought all over the world, you know,” Pantoja said. “I’ve fought in South Korea. I fought in Abu Dhabi. I’ve fought in Chile and Argentina and Glasgow. I’ve never fought for the UFC in Brazi. That’s my wish for Papa Dana for Christmas. I want to defend my belt in Rio de Janeiro. That’s my town. I try to be a new idol for Brazil. I said that all week. Brazil needs good idols. They need good heroes right now. Some guys respect their opponents. Some guys bring your family up all the time. This cut weight [sic] I had my young son by my side. He helped me a lot. I made good work as a parent, a husband, a father. I tried to give this (perspective) for the world.”
