Bellator 228 pre-event facts: Patricio ‘Pitbull’ rules Bellator record books

A busy weekend of Bellator action continues Saturday with Bellator 228, which takes place at The Forum in Inglewood, Calif., with a main card that streams on DAZN following prelims on MMA Junkie.

The event features the second half of the Bellator featherweight grand prix opening round, including a championship fight in the main event that sees dual-champ Patricio Freire (29-4 MMA, 17-4 BMMA) put his 145-pound belt on the line against Juan Archuleta (23-1 MMA, 5-0 BMMA), who hasn’t lost in more than four years.

Main event

Freire competes in his 22nd Bellator bout, the second most appearances in company history behind David Rickels (23).

Freire competes in his 10th Bellator title fight, the second most in company history behind Michael Chandler (11).

Freire is one of two simultaneous two-division champions in Bellator history. Ryan Bader also accomplished the feat.

Freire is one of three fighters in Bellator history to win titles in two weight classes. Bader and Joe Warren also accomplished the feat.

Freire’s seven victories in Bellator championship fights are most in company history.

Freire’s 17 victories in Bellator competition are most in company history.

Freire’s 16 victories in Bellator featherweight competition are most in divisional history.

Freire’s 11 stoppage victories in Bellator competition are tied with Chandler for most in company history.

Freire’s 10 stoppage victories in Bellator featherweight competition are most in divisional history.

Freire’s seven knockout victories in Bellator competition are tied for third most in company history behind Patricky Freire (nine) and Douglas Lima (nine).

Freire’s four submission victories in Bellator featherweight competition are tied for most in divisional history.

Archuleta enters the event on an 18-fight winning streak. He hasn’t suffered a defeat since March 2015 in what was his only career blemish.

Archuleta was a three-division champion under the King of the Cage banner, holding titles at lightweight, featherweight and bantamweight.

Archuleta is 9-0 in his career when fighting at featherweight.

Co-main event

Lyoto Machida (26-8 MMA, 2-0 BMMA) returns to the middleweight division after a one-fight stint at light heavyweight where he beat Chael Sonnen at Bellator 222.

Machida’s current four-fight winning streak is his longest since he started his career 16-0.

Machida is the only fighter in UFC history to absorb zero strikes in two main events. He accomplished the feat at UFC Fight Night 58 and UFC Fight Night 31.

Machida is the only fighter in UFC history to earn two knockout victories stemming from a front kick to the head. He accomplished the feat at UFC 224 and UFC 129.

Machida has earned 11 career victories against a fighter who once held a UFC, Bellator, Strikeforce or PRIDE title.

Gegard Mousasi (45-7-2 MMA, 3-1 BMMA) will rematch Machida after he suffered a unanimous decision loss in their first meeting at UFC Fight Night 36 in February 2014.

Mousasi is one of five middleweight champions in Bellator history. He lost the title at Bellator 223.

Mousasi is the only fighter in MMA history to claim titles under the Bellator and Strikeforce banners.

Mousasi has earned 37 of his 45 career victories by stoppage. He’s earned 32 of those wins in Round 1.

Remaining main card

Darrion Caldwell (13-3 MMA, 10-2 BMMA) has suffered consecutive losses for the first time in his career. He hasn’t earned a victory since August 2018.

Caldwell returns to the featherweight division after losing his bantamweight title at Bellator 222.

Caldwell is 4-0 in Bellator featherweight competition. He’s 6-0 in the weight class during his career.

Caldwell has earned five submission victories in Bellator competition. The company record is six, which is currently shared by six different fighters.

Caldwell’s three submission victories in Bellator bantamweight competition are the most in divisional history.

Henry Corrales’ (17-3 MMA, 5-3 BMMA) five-fight Bellator winning streak in featherweight competition is the second longest active streak in the division behind A.J. McKee (14).

Daniel Weichel (39-11 MMA, 8-3 BMMA) returns to the featherweight division after a one-fight stint at lightweight where he lost at Bellator 210.

Saul Rogers (13-2 MMA, 1-0 BMMA) competes in the United States for the first time in his professional career.
