Bellator 271’s Tyrell Fortune: ‘Old ass’ heavyweights should fight each other, focus promotion on younger talent

The Bellator heavyweight division is starting to heat up and Tyrell Fortune believes it’s time for some fresh faces at the top of the division.

At Bellator 271, Fortune (11-1 MMA, 11-1 BMMA) will face former training partner Linton Vassell (21-8 MMA, 9-5 BMMA) in the co-main event. Both competitors believe the winner of the fight should earn No. 1 contender status, but beyond that, Fortune thinks the Bellator should shift their focus to promoting the younger talent in the division.

“These old dudes – Cheick Kongo, Fedor, Emelianenko, Tim Johnson are all old ass guys,” Fortune told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s media day. “What’s the purpose of pushing those guys? How much longer do they really have? I only lost to one of them and I don’t think Fedor is going to choose a fight against me. I don’t think Cheick Kongo is either, so I think they should just fight each other and just move to the side.”

Fortune is currently on a three-fight win streak and is about to enter his fourth fight in just a couple of days over a 12-month span. While he understands the marketability of big names like Emelianenko, he believes a win over Vassell should put him right in the mix at the top of the division.
