Brian Ortega releases statement, will be ready to ‘chuck ’em again’ after UFC 266 injuries heal

Brian Ortega has released a short statement following his title challenge on this past Saturday.

In the main event of UFC 266, Ortega (15-2 MMA, 7-2 UFC) challenged Alexander Volkanovski (23-1 MMA, 10-0 UFC) for the featherweight title in what turned out to be an instant classic fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Ortega lost the bout via unanimous decision but had a couple of moments where his fantastic grappling game almost won him the title with a couple of close call submission attempts. Although he was unable to secure victory, he earned the “Fight of the Night” bonus along with Volkanovski.

Due to being transported for his injuries after the bout, Ortega was not available to address the media at the post-fight news conference. Shortly after the medical suspensions were revealed on Tuesday, Ortega took to Instagram to deliver a short statement accompanied by a video of his in-cage post-fight interview.

Fractured orbital and some bruised ribs, once this orbital heals I’ll be ready to chuck em again !! I meant what I said.. I love you guys!

Ortega is facing a potential six-month suspension for his injuries sustained in the bout against Volkanovski. His right orbital fracture prompted a 180-day suspension but that time could be shorter if cleared by a doctor. He was also given a suspension from contact in training for 45 days. His suspensions likely mean he will not fight again in 2021.

Judging by his statement, it appears Ortega is in good spirits after the fight and will be ready to compete again as soon as he’s healthy.

The fight at UFC 266 was Ortega’s only contest in 2021, due to preparation for his title fight along with the filming of “The Ultimate Fighter 29,” where he and Volkanovski served as rival coaches.
