Chris Weidman reflects on fear of ‘possible amputation’ in E:60 snippet of ‘The Return’

ESPN released a snippet of the E:60 documentary profiling Chris Weidman’s horrific leg break.

Weidman (15-7 MMA, 11-7 UFC) snapped his right leg when his low kick attempt was checked by Uriah Hall just 17 seconds into their middleweight bout at UFC 261 in April 2021.

The former champion stepped back on his injured leg, where the pressure caused the bone to protrude out of his skin. It took multiple procedures to repair Weidman’s leg, and the 39-year-old admitted that he feared entirely losing his leg.

“I was pretty scared about this pain because I’m thinking about the worst-case scenario,” Weidman said. “Worst-case scenario is that the blood supply doesn’t come back to my bone and it doesn’t take, which would mean possible amputation.”

Weidman relived the excruciatingly painful moment.

“I go back and I see vaguely my leg split in half,” Weidman said. “I’m like, ‘What the f*ck – there’s no way that’s my leg.’ Then, all of a sudden, the pain starts coming. I couldn’t believe it. The paramedics come in, they’re trying to move my leg around, and I feel the bone, and I see the bone sticking out of the leg. I’m like, ‘Oh my God, please just get me pain pills.””

Weidman wasn’t going to back down. “The All-American” made his return over two years later when he faced Brad Tavares at UFC 292 this past August. He lost the bout by unanimous decision where he ended up fracturing his other leg.

But Weidman was insistent on making the walk, and still refuses to hang up his gloves after falling short in his return.

“How about the challenge and the story? That just excites me,” Weidman said. “I love when people are counting me out.”
