Conor McGregor vs. ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone headlines UFC 246 on Jan. 18

The long-rumored matchup between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone is finally a reality.

UFC president Dana White today told ESPN.com that McGregor and “Cowboy” will meet in the welterweight main event of UFC 246, which takes place Jan. 18 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. MMA Junkie subsequently confirmed the plans with White, as well.

According to White, McGregor has already signed his bout agreement for the non-title matchup, with Cerrone expected to follow suit in short order. While the contest takes place at 170 pounds, the result will certainly have an impact at 155 pounds, as well, with Cerrone (36-13 MMA, 23-10 UFC) currently sitting at No. 5 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie lightweight rankings, and McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC) checking in at No. 13.

A former two-division champion, McGregor seeks his first win since his iconic November 2016 title win over Eddie Alvarez. “The Notorious” then took a leave from the sport to pursue a boxing superfight with Floyd Mayweather before returning to the octagon in October 2018 in a failed bid to unseat current UFC lightweight champ Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Meanwhile, Cerrone is among the most respected fighters in all of the sport, with a penchant for putting on exciting fights against all takers. However, he’s also seeking to break out of a slump after suffering back-to-back stoppage losses to current top contenders Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson.

With the addition to the card, the UFC 246 lineup now includes:

  • Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone
  • Maycee Barber vs. Roxanne Modafferi
  • Drew Dober vs. Nasrat Haqparast
  • Grant Dawson vs. Chas Skelly
  • Maurice Greene vs. Aleksei Oleinik
  • Claudia Gadelha vs. Alexa Grasso
  • Andre Fili vs. Sodiq Yusuff
  • Diego Ferreira vs. Anthony Pettis
