The legendary Cris Cyborg will look to add a featherweight title in a fourth promotion when she makes her Bellator debut on Jan. 25.
The former 145-pound titleholder in the UFC, Strikeforce, and Invicta FC will meet Bellator champion Julia Budd on a Jan. 25 card in Inglewood, Calif. MMA Junkie confirmed an initial Friday report by the Los Angeles Times through a source with knowledge of the situation.
Cyborg (21-2 MMA, 0-0 BMMA) wasted little time signing with Bellator, where she was reunited with former Strikeforce president Scott Coker, when the UFC waived their exclusive negotiation window after Cyborg fought the last bout of her contract.
That ended a rocky three-year stint with the UFC, in which she and UFC president Dana White often butted heads. The final round of acrimony came following Cyborg’s one-sided victory over Felicia Spencer at UFC 240.
That bout was a rebound from Cyborg’s stunning first-round loss to Amanda Nunes at UFC 232, also at The Forum, which brought an end to Cyborg’s title reign and a win streak which dated back to 2005.
In Budd (13-2 MMA, 7-0 BMMA), Cyborg will face one of the most underrated competitors in the game. The 36-year-old British Columbia native has won 11 straight fights since dropping a 2011 matchup with Ronda Rousey. Budd’s first-round finish of Olga Rubin at Bellator 214 marked her third successful defense of a belt she won in March 2017.
No word yet on what number Bellator event the Jan. 25 card will be, as the schedule in the interim has not yet been finalized.
