Dana White: ‘No way’ UFC champ Max Holloway fights ‘anytime soon’

LAS VEGAS – UFC President Dana White says there are some mixed diagnosis when it comes to the condition of UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway.

Holloway (19-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) was forced to withdraw from his scheduled title defense against Brian Ortega (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) late Wednesday night when he was said to have been showing concussion-like symptoms. Holloway was admitted to a Las Vegas hospital twice this week and participated in several interviews that caused concern about his physical state.

Attempts to figure out exactly what’s wrong with the Hawaiian titleholder are ongoing, and according to White at today’s UFC 226 pre-fight press conference, the exact nature of Holloway’s situation is still unclear, and there will be no discussion of him stepping back into the octagon until it’s figured out.

“It’s a weird situation,” White told MMAjunkie. “I was just talking to Jeff Novitzky in the back, and there’s a couple of different – some people think it’s concussion-related, some people think it’s weight-cutting related. They haven’t really got down to the bottom of what it is, but according to him, he feels fine. But obviously he’s not fine. So we’re going to continue to try to figure out what’s wrong with Max Holloway. In the meantime, there’s no way this guy’s going to fight anytime soon.”

UFC 226 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.

2018 has been the most challenging year of Holloway’s career. After fighting 18 times under the UFC banner since his 2012 debut, he’s had three fights scratched in the past five months.

Holloway suffered an ankle injury that forced him out of UFC 222 in March, was ruled medically unfit to continue his weight cut ahead of UFC 223 in April, and now the latest setback ahead of UFC 226.

White said the health of his 145-pound champion is most important, and he intends on sending Holloway through a battery of tests.

“We’re running him through every test there is,” White said. “He needs to go to like the Mayo Clinic or one of these places and do a full – yes, we will take care of Max Holloway. He’ll go through every type of testing there is until we figure out what’s wrong with him.”

White said it’s an unfortunate situation that happened with Holloway, but one in his mind that was a “freak” occurrence. White has noticed the pattern of unfortunate events that have followed Holloway this year, and he hopes a resolution will come.

“He was getting ready for a fight, that fight fell out,” White said. “Then he was getting ready for another fight, and he didn’t make weight, couldn’t make the weight. Then the list goes on and on. Three or four fights, I can’t remember exactly what it was. Cutting weight for three or four fights in a row. It’s very weird. We’ll figure it out, and that’s that.”
