Dana White responds to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s threat to quit UFC: ‘We’re good’

An apparent standoff with Khabib Nurmagomedov and the UFC has been resolved, according to president Dana White – even if he didn’t sound entirely sure.

Nurmagomedov last week threatened to leave the UFC if the promotion fired his teammate, Zubaira Tukhugov, who was involved in the melee he sparked after submitting Conor McGregor in the UFC 229 main event.

But, according to White, that problem is so last week.

“We’re good. We’re good with Khabib,” White told TMZ on Tuesday. “You guys are still posting that (expletive). That was a week ago. That was a week ago. A lot happens in a week in this business.”

So, who’s next for Nurmagomedov? Could it be an immediate rematch with McGregor or perhaps a fight against Tony Ferguson? White pumped the brakes on delving into the possibilities.

“The fight just ended, and we’re still dealing with commission issues,” White said. “Now we’re working on other fights until we figure that one out.”

Nurmagomedov, his teammates and McGregor face discipline from the Nevada State Athletic Commission over their role in the brawl. The commission withheld the champ’s $2 million purse and briefly detained Tukhugov and two others who scrapped with McGregor.

McGregor managed to take home his disclosed $3 million payday, but was later identified as a potential recipient of a commission complaint. Nurmagomedov currently is taking a victory lap for his blockbuster win, which garnered over 2 million pay-per-view buys, according to White.

White was cagey on whether or not Tukhugov will stay in the UFC, downplayed Nurmagomedov’s threat to quit and said the champ will remain in the fold.

“I know what he said, but that was a week ago,” White said. “This will all work out.”

Pressed to describe the current state of the relationship, White chalked up the champ’s reaction to the heated rivalry with McGregor.

“Yeah, no, we’re good. We worked it out,” White said. “We’re going to get everything worked out. Obviously, he was a little upset, a little fired up. And, yeah, we’ll get it all worked out.

“Guys get very emotional, man. And that was a very emotional fight for him, obviously. At the end of the day, Khabib is a great guy, and we’ve always had a great relationship with him. It’s all good, brother.”

As recently as this past Friday, Nurmagomedov didn’t necessarily seem to be on good terms with the promotion. In an interview with a state-owned Russian TV network, he accused the UFC of staging the April bus attack in Brooklyn that left several injured and ratcheted up the tension between his camp and McGregor’s.

But that was four whole days ago, so a lot may have changed.
