Dana White’s Contender Series 10 results: Four winners earn UFC contracts

LAS VEGAS – The second episode of of Dana White’s Contender Series Season 2 went down tonight, and MMAjunkie was on the scene. The event took place at The Ultimate Fighter Gym and streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

For the first time in the show’s brief history, UFC President Dana White handed out four UFC contracts to winners – Matt Sayles, Ryan Spann, Anthony Hernandez, and Dwight Grant.

Recaps of each bout are below.

Matt Sayles. (UFC)

Welterweight Matt Sayles (7-1) impressed in his time in the spotlight, earning a dominant first-round TKO win over a previously unbeaten Yazan Hajeh (6-1)

The contest served as the featured bout of Tuesday’s Dana White’s Contender Series 10 event, which took place at The Ultimate Fighter Gym in Las Vegas and streamed live on UFC Fight Pass.

Sayles landed a big right hand in the opening seconds, and it clearly took its toll. Hajeh backed away and reset, but it set an early tone for Sayles, who certainly seemed energized. The two scrambled briefly to the ground, but Sayles got back to his feet, where a few more big right hands sent his opponent tumbling to the canvas. Sayles seized the opportunity, jumping first to side control and then to mount, where he unleashed a vicious barrage of non-stop punches that rattled home over and over until the fight was finally waved off at the 1:57 mark of the first round.

Anthony Hernandez. (UFC)

In the night’s penultimate contest, Anthony Hernandez (7-0) overwhelmed a previously undefeated Jordan Wright (6-1).

Wright set up on the outside to start but was the busier fighter. Hernandez was patient, instead, and it paid off. Landing clean from the first real punch he threw, Hernandez seemed to sense his chance for an early finish. Unleashing a vicious barrage of strikes, Hernandez landed clean with several stunning blows, sending his opponent to a knee. Hernandez was relentless from there, with referee Mark Smith giving Wright every opportunity to recover.

It didn’t happen, and the fight was waved off just 40 seconds after it began.

In a featherweight matchup, Austin Springer (11-3) survived a dangerous Giga Chikadze (5-2) on the feet, eventually dragging him to the floor and picking up a gritty third-round submission win.

Chikadze took the center at the start, firing out flashy kicks from various angles. Springer circled on the outside, looking for his opportunity to move inside. That moment came after a Chikadze high kick, and Springer was able to wrap the body and move the action to the cage. Chikadze was stuck there briefly but ultimately pulled away and reset in the center. From there, a Chikadze left stunned his opponent, and a flying kick that followed just missed the mark.

Off-balance from the leaping strike, Chikadze fell to his back but actually threatened with a triangle choke just briefly, before Springer eventually extracted his limb and circled past the hold. Chikadze settled to guard, threatening with a few upkicks in the moments his opponent tried to posture up. Chikadze was able to quickly scramble up to his feet, but Springer walked through a kick to drive him again to the floor before the bell.

Chikadze struck a wide stance to open the second. Flashing out kicks, he landed low with one shot, but Springer was able to grab the leg and decided to fight on. He didn’t get the takedown, and Chikadze was again loose on the feet, looking for the striking finish. With his kicks being muffled, Chikadze turned to his hands, as well, before defending another takedown attempt. Still, Springer stuck with the idea, and a later takedown did get Chikadze to the canvas.

Chikadze finally worked to his feet in the final minute, though it was obvious he was winded. Still, he tried to fire off a few more flashy kicks – including a rolling thunder – before the bell.

Switching stances to start the third, Chikadze did find some more success on the feet, but Springer stayed firm in the pocket and was willing to return fire. Chikadze briefly tripped his opponent the ground, but Springer scrambled quickly back to his feet and returned to his hunt for the takedown.

Chikadze was clearly the superior fighter on the feet, but the constant threat of a takedown made his efforts a bit reserved in nature. Springer did finally get the fight to the floor late in the round, and he went for broke with his opportunity. Setting up the arm-triangle choke from the top, Springer nearly finished it there. Instead, Chikadze escaped well but wound up exposing his neck, which Springer happily attacked, earning a hard-fought submission win just 50 seconds prior to the end of the contest.

In light heavyweight action, Ryan Spann (14-5) made good use of his second time on the Contender Series stage by scoring a lightning-quick win over Emiliano Sordi (16-7).

Spann took the center early and looked ready to throw down, before an early connection took an off-balance opponent to the floor. As Sordi tried to scramble back up, Spann briefly looked to take the back but instead saw the opportunity to latch on to a guillotine choke. The squeeze earned a quick tap, though referee Mark Smith didn’t seem to catch the initial indicator. Still trapped, Sordi repeated it a second time, ending the fight in 26 seconds.

Dwight Grant and Tyler Hill. (UFC)

In the night’s first fight, welterweights Dwight Grant (8-1) and Tyler Hill (6-2) went toe-to-toe for nearly a round and a half before Grant scored a vicious finish.

The two men came out swinging to start the contest, with both men finding range from the start. Hill’s aggression earned him points, but Grant’s quick counters found their mark, as well. Grant’s strikes were a little more looping in nature, but they were effective in landing clean. Hill added in a few sharp low kicks, as well, though Grant’s counters made those a risky option.

Hill suffered a small cut over his eye late in the first, and he absorbed a big liver punch, as well, though he was swinging back until the bell.

Hill pressed forward again in the second, but Grant’s return fire was far more impressive. Fighting from the outside, Grant’s strikes clearly frustrated his foe, though Hill weathered the shots fairly impressively until a two-punch combo left him out cold. A right hand stunned Hill on the feet, and a left hand came behind it to send him to the deck in violent fashion and ending the contest at the 2:08 mark of the second round.
