Kamaru Usman was adamant about a UFC Fight Night 129 replacement opponent being ranked. He’s got what he wants and then some.
The promotion today announced that former welterweight title challenger Demian Maia will step in on roughly three weeks notice to take on Usman in the event’s new main event after original headliner Santiago Ponzinibbio withdrew last weekend because of an injury.
UFC Fight Night 129 takes place May 19 at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile. The card airs on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

From a rankings perspective, Maia (25-8 MMA, 19-8 UFC) represents a bigger challenge and opportunity for Usman (12-1 MMA, 7-0 UFC), with Maia No. 5 in the official UFC rankings and Ponzinibbio at No. 10. Maia also is the biggest name Usman has faced in his nearly three-year UFC career.
Maia, though, will come into the fight reeling. The 40 year-old veteran, who’s fought in the UFC since 2007, has lost his last two fights to break a seven-fight winning streak. Maia failed in his title bid against Tyron Woodley last July, losing by unanimous decision at UFC 214. Maia followed up that performance with a unanimous-decision loss to Colby Covington three months later.
Usman, No. 8 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA welterweight rankings, is riding seven consecutive wins and has been begging for a breakthrough opportunity against a relevant opponent.
